    • 873,587. Photo-electric control arrangements. UCHIDA, I. June 25, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 21846/59. Class 40(3) [Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for counting bank-notes and like articles comprises a delivery device designed to feed the notes one at a time in spaced relationship past a photo-electric counting device and a receiving and stacking device for the counted notes. The apparatus rejects notes which overlap and gives a warning when notes pass the counting device without a space between them and thereby make the count inaccurate. The notes are stacked in an input position on conveyer 4 and are fed forward by the conveyer to pass over driven rollers 6 and under a set of levers 7 to feed roller 19 and pressing element 9. The coefficient of friction of the surface of drum 19 is arranged to be greater than that of pressing element 9 which is, in turn, greater than that of the notes to be counted. The coefficients may be in the ratios 3:2:1 although this is not critical. Rotation of the drum 19 serves to pass the notes forward substantially one at a time along a short conveyer 57 (or down a guide) to a further conveyer travelling at a higher speed than the peripheral speed of drum 19. This consists of pairs of upper and lower V-belts 21, 22 between which the notes pass the photo-electric arrangements in spaced-apart relationship. To reduce wear on the friction surfaces of drum 19 and element 9 one of the levers 7 includes a contact which touches a slip ring 6 1 on a roller 6 when the supply of notes is exhausted and completes the circuit of an electromagnet withdrawing presser element 9. A further electromagnet returns the element to the operative position when the lever slip-ring circuit is interrupted by further notes. Photo-electric devices perform three functions. Firstly the notes pass between a light source 27 and cell 29. If two overlapping notes pass the level of illumination is reduced to such an extent that a circuit is operated to prevent counting, direct the overlapping notes into a reject bin 41 by dropping fork 39, and stop the feed. Secondly photo cell 30 and co-operating light source 28 provides an impulse to the counter each time the illumination increases due to a gap between the notes. The count may be indicated on scales 32 and associated dials 73 may be preset with a desired count in which case at the correct count the machine is stopped and any extra notes passing through directed by fork 39 into bin 41. Thirdly a row of photo-cells greater in length than the length of one note is provided to avoid errors due to notes not being spaced apart as they pass the counting cell. If two notes not spaced apart cover all the cells in the row a warning is given and counting stopped. After the notes have passed the photo-electric devices they are passed by V-belts 34 to a box 35. The motor driving the belts 34 also vibrates a plate 72 by means of a cam to aid in stacking the notes.

    • 1,133,699. Coin counting and wrapping machines. I. UCHIDA. 10 April, 1967 [3 Nov., 1966], No. 16344/67. Heading B8C. Coin wrapping and counting apparatus of the kind forming a stack and then wrapping it, includes means whereby coins of an incomplete stack may be discharged before wrapping and the machine at the same time be reset for the next operation. The coin feeding and wrapping apparatus are of known kinds the latter being as described in U.S. Specification 3,037,336. Coins are projected centrifugally from a rotating disc 1 against an adjustable guide 3, a gap between disc and guide permitting undersized coins to fall clear. The coins are fed through a gate 2 by a roller 13, the gate excluding over-sized coins, to a shoot 53 leading to the stacking cylinder 50, Fig. 11. The latter includes hinged halves 50a, 50b which open to permit removal of the stack by arms 133 (one only shown) for wrapping. The machine shown forms stacks of fifty coins, a counting wheel 4 being rotated by their passage through the gate and operating a counter 9 through gearing 6, 7. The shaft of the wheel carries a pinion 10, Fig. 5, which, through an idler 11, rotates a gear 12 having fifty teeth and an aperture 17 which receives a locking lug (19a), Fig. 4 (not shown) once per revolution, e.g. once per wrapping operation. In the event that the mass of coins distributed by the disc 1 is not a multiple of fifty, the odd coins form an incomplete stack. The operator presses a contact which engages a solenoid 140 to withdraw a shutter 135 from beneath the base of the cylinder 50 and allow the coins to fall through. At the same time a motor is started to rotate a cam-shaft 90. One cam 103 pivots a lever 110 through associated linkage to clear the idler 11 from the pinion 10 and gear 12 to free the latter. A further cam disc 113 causes a lever 120 to engage an ovoid cam 122 on the shaft of the gear 12 to return it to the start position. Another cam 91 permits the lug (19a) to enter the aperture 17 in the gear to lock it in this position. A face cam (97), Fig. 10 (not shown), on a shaft driven by the shaft 90 zeroizes the counter and after one revolution of this shaft, the motor is stopped.

    • 1,133,700. Shoots; coin-packaging machines. I. UCHIDA. 13 April, 1967 [3 Nov., 1966], No. 17108/67. Headings B8C and B8S. [Also in Division G4] Coin-counting apparatus can deliver coins into a first position 52 where a batch of coins is wrapped or a second position where they are delivered to a bag 80, Fig. 8. Assorted coins in a hopper 1 are moved by centrifugal action to the periphery, small coins discharging through a gap between 1 and 3, Fig. 2. Coins 2 of the prescribed size are advanced by a continuously driven rubber roller 13 so as to engage in recesses 4a, so driving wheels 4, 6, 7 to advance counter 9. The wheel 4 is on a shaft with a gear 10, Fig. 5, so controlled by a one-rotation device, comprising gear 12, slot 17 and a lever (19) (Fig. 7), that after fifty coins have been delivered a switch opens and the drive stops. For such an operation the delivery shoot is as shown in full lines in Fig. 8 and the coins fall into a cylinder 52. The coins are then wrapped in known manner. An electromagnet restores the lever (19) so that another operation can ensue. To deliver more than fifty coins a knob (37) is turned to adjust a gear 30, Fig. 5. At the same time a lock 59, 60 is released and a lever 68 is rocked to bring the shoot 55 into an inclined position, whereby coins are fed into a bag 80. A slide 22 prevents the end of lever (19) engaging slot 17 so that gear 12 is permitted to make more than one revolution, transfer to gear 30 being effected by pin 32. If the coins are not to be batched but merely counted, gear 30 is turned so that gap 30a lies in the path of pin 32.
