In local playback or unicast streaming applications, to select an independently decodable track for a certain media type, the information of alternate track groups is first found via the track relation box, and one track is selected from an alternate track group for the media type. If stream switching is desired, the switching track group information is found via the track relation box. In multicast applications with scalable or MDC streams, the tracks in a layered or MDC group are found via the track relation box and selected among all the layered or MDC groups.

The broadcast multicast service center (BM-SC) provides the same MBMS user service in two variants, one for the regular MBMS and the other for MBSFN. The MBSFN variant of the service may be charged differently and would then need to be protected separately. In various embodiments, the user equipment is informed that the same service is present in different variants and therefore can then select one of the available variants for consumption.

This mapping is used to enable the correct positioning of the stream in a PSS session by a PSS server after a handover has occurred. Broadcast multicast service center (BM-SC) signals can support various options for media playback after a MBMS-PSS handover in a PSS session description protocol (SDP) file or in the MBMS user service description (USD). In response, the client can signal its choice in the RTSP request that is sent when switching to the PSS session.

In accordance with aspects of the invention, however, the boundaries of each data burst are allowed to grow or shrink by a limited amount.

The two streams may then be inserted into time slice frames, such that a single frame carries two portions of data: one corresponding to a first time segment in the program, and a second corresponding to a different time segment in the program. A receiving mobile terminal may buffer the received data, and may use the lower quality data as a backup in the event of a transmission error in the higher quality data.
