    • A first power mechanism is provided in association with a fixed support and with a swingable structure, and pivots the swingable structure relative to the fixed support between an extended position and a folded position adjacent the vehicle. A second power mechanism is operatively associated with a swingable structure and a mirror housing to move the mirror housing between inner and outer extended positions. A third mechanism moves the mirror unit into desired adjusted position about horizontal and vertical axes. An electronic control controls the operation of the first power mechanism, the second power mechanism and third power mechanism to control the powered pivoting of swingable structure.

    • A vehicle mirror assembly comprising a housing assembly, a mirror unit, a support assembly to support the housing assembly, a power operated pivot assembly between the support assembly and the housing assembly to enable the housing assembly to be pivoted with respect to the support assembly about a generally upright axis (1) between an operative position and a folded position in response to the power operation of the pivot assembly and (2) from the operative position thereof in either direction in response to an unwanted impact blow applied in either direction thereto. A spring biased pivotal control system is disposed between a movable tubular member of the pivot assembly and the support assembly to provide a control resistance to pivotal movement of the movable tubular member and hence the housing assembly connected thereto. A spring biased indexing system is disposed between a motion transmitting member and the movable tubular member to (1) transmit the movement of the motion transmitting member under power to the movable tubular member to thereby move the housing assembly between the operative and folded positions with the control system providing a control resistance and (2) allow the movable tubular member to be moved from the operative position relative to the motion transmitting member in response to an unwanted impact blow applied to the housing assembly in either direction to move the housing assembly from the operative position with the indexing system providing an indexing resistance to such movement which is independent of the control resistance.

    • A rearview mirror assembly comprising a fixed support structure, a movable mirror housing structure having a mirror unit adjustable mounted therein, and a spring-biased mounting assembly mounting the movable structure on the fixed structure (1) for spring-biased movement into a normal operating position wherein said movable structure extends laterally outwardly from the exterior of the vehicle where it is susceptible to the application of unwanted forwardly directed forces or unwanted rearwardly directed forces, (2) for movement forwardly through a forward range of movement out of said operative position in response to the application of unwanted forwardly directed force so that upon release of the force the spring bias is operable to return the movable structure to its operative position and (3) for movement rearwardly through a rearward range of movement out of the operating position in response to the application of an unwanted rearwardly directed force sufficient to overcome the spring bias which spring bias decreases to zero as the distance of rearward movement of the movable structure out of the operative position increases to an intermediate point within the rearward range of movement and thereafter reverses to bias the movable structure into a rearwardly folded limiting position. A power-driven assembly is provided for applying a yieldable force pattern to the movable structure to overcome the spring bias within the rearward range of movement so as to selectively move the movable structure between the operative and rearwardly folded limiting positions.

    • An exterior mirror for a vehicle comprises a base member adapted to be mounted on the vehicle body, first pivotal engagement means mounted on an arm secured to the base member so as to project laterally from the vehicle body, a housing for a reflective member having second pivotal engagement means, and resilient means for urging the first and second pivotal engagement means into engagement with one another so that the housing is pivotally movable relative to the base member about a first pivot axis. First abutment means on the housing and second abutment means on the base member closer to the vehicle body than the first pivot axis are so arranged that that movement of the end of the housing remote from the base member in a predetermined direction causes angular movement about the first pivot axis, bringing the first abutment means into engagement with the second abutment means, continued movement of the end of the housing remote from the base member in said predetermined direction causing angular movement of the housing about a second pivot axis coincident with the point of engagement of said abutment means and resulting in mutual disengagement of the first and second pivotal engagement means. The resilient means is coupled to said point on the base member by a link which is pivotally attached to the base member at said point, the link being movable between a first position in which the line of action of the spring pulls the housing towards its position of normal use and a second position in which the spring pulls the housing towards the body of the vehicle.

    • A rearview mirror assembly comprises a reflective element, preferably fabricated of a lightweight, rigid, high-strength plastic and a relatively thin reflective film conformably attached thereto. A portion of the reflective element can also comprise a convex surface for monitoring the “blind spot” typically experienced by the driver. A mirror-mounted light assembly, such as for turn signals, can be incorporated into the reflective element. The mirror assembly can also comprise a chromomorphic polymeric element in planar alignment with the reflective element, which can be electrically and/or thermally activated. The chromomorphic polymeric element can change its resident color between transparent and a predetermined activated color to provide a dimming function as a characteristic of the particular chromomorphic polymeric element that is employed.
