    • An electron-beam irradiation apparatus allows electron beam generated in a vacuum container to pass through a window foil that partitions the vacuum container from a process vessel and irradiates gas containing moisture with electron beam to thereby process the gas. The electron-beam irradiation apparatus comprises a vacuum container (1) for generating electron beam, a process vessel (2) for containing the wet gas, and a window foil or window foils (3, 4) for partitioning the vacuum container from the process vessel and allowing the electron beam to pass therethrough. The window foil (4) has a surface for contacting the wet gas and is made of titanium or an alloy containing titanium as main component, and the surface of the window foil (4) is coated with one of the platinum metals such as palladium.

    • A high temperature gas containing sulfur oxides is cooled to a certain range of temperature by a cooling tower (24). The cooling tower (24) is a water recirculating type cooling tower in which water is recirculated by a pump (23). After the gas is cooled by the cooling tower (24), it is introduced into a process vessel (25). A portion of recirculating cooling water is withdrawn from a recirculation water tank (26) associated with the cooling tower (24), and sprayed into the process vessel (25). The sprayed withdrawn water is evaporated completely with no wastewater. Ammonia is supplied from an ammonia supply equipment (29) to the process vessel (25). The gas supplied from the cooling tower and ammonia supplied from the ammonia supply equipment (29) are irradiated with electron beam. Under the influence of the electron beam, the sulfur oxides contained in the gas are oxidized with the formation of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and removed.
