    • 1328695 Digital control of position INFORMATION STORAGE SYSTEMS Inc 20 Aug 1970 [20 Aug 1969] 40252/70 Heading G4H [Also in Division H2] A circuit for balancing the effects of offset and drift in components of an amplifier 11 which forms part of a D.C. servo system used, for example, in positioning an array of read/write heads at selected track locations on the discs of a magnetic data storage device, comprises a summing junction 12 which receives tachometer TACH, coarse position CPS, fine position FPS, and temperature compensation signals T 1 , T 2 , an inverter 13 which receives the output of the amplifier 11 or the position signal from the actuator or motor (not shown) supplied by the amplifier, and a summing junction 14 which receives the output of the inverter 13 and the fine position FPS and temperature compensation signals T 1 , T 2 , all of which are combined to form a difference signal which is equal in magnitude to, but opposite in phase with, the aggregate offset and D.C. drift in the amplifier 11, this difference signal being fed back as a balance signal to the junction 12. A gate 16 blocks the amplified difference signal during the coarse positioning step, the signal being fed to a low pass filter 17 and, after storage therein, applied through a buffer amplifier 18 to the junction 12. In this manner, the balance signal is determined during the fine positioning step and applied to the amplifier 11 during both the fine and coarse steps. The fine positioning may be done by a mechanical detent or by a fine position servo as described in Specification 1,294,841. The circuit formed by members 15, 16, 17 and 18 comprises an arrangement of transistors, diodes and resistors, an operational amplifier, a logic unit and a capacitor, Fig. 2 (not shown). Operation is such that the balance signal is always of the same polarity. To prevent damage during start-up of the system, impedances in series with the capacitor are bypassed for a predetermined period during the starting operation to reduce the time constant of the R.C. circuit, the by-pass circuit being a series-connected resistor and transistor controlled by the logic unit.
