    • 1, 249, 451. Measuring speed. INFORMATION STORAGE SYSTEMS Inc. Jan. 6, 1970 [Jan. 21, 1969], No. 683/70. Heading GIN. In a servosystem for radially positioning a read/ write head on a recording disk, the radial velocity of the head is measured by continuously deriving an "acceleration derived" signal by integrating the current through the servomotor and intermittently deriving accurate "position derived" signals by differentiating or otherwise operating on signals representing the radial position of the head and using the "position derived" signals to correct the "acceleration derived" signal whereby to obtain an accurate velocity signal. As shown in Fig. 3, integrating capacitors 34, 42 are charged at a rate proportional to the current through the servomotor 11, switches 53 and 56 or 55 and 54 being closed depending on the direction in which the motor is running. An alternating position signal from a transducer (13) is differentiated at 25 and fed to sampling circuits 19 and 20 which, under the control of switches 33, 29 and 37, 41 are intermittently connected to the capacitors 34 and 42 respectively to correct the charge thereon. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the position signals are in the form of pulses produced as the read/ write head crosses the tracks on the disk. A ramp generator (67) is reset by each of these pulses, and a capacitor (72) is discharged from a fixed voltage V at a rate proportional to the peak voltage reached by the ramp generator (67), this being inversely proportional to the speed of the head. A further ramp generator (75) is started by the leading edge of each track crossing pulse and stopped when capacitor 72 is discharged, thereby reaching a peak voltage proportional to the radial velocity of the head.

    • 1329991 Automatic speed control INFORMATION STORAGE SYSTEMS Inc 20 Aug 1970 [20 Aug 1969] 40253/70 Heading G3R The access mechanism of a disc storage drive is retracted under energency conditions such as power supply or component failure by an electric motor having a movable coil 16 which develops a velocity proportional voltage across lines 17, 18, the IR drop being corrected by a signal from resistor 23 and the effect of inductive switching spikes being nullified by filter networks 19, 25. The occurrence of an emergency condition causes device 26 to generate a signal which activates transistors 27, 31, to apply a voltage to line 18 and to provide an emitter biasing voltage for transistors 35, 36. An output from summing amplifier 15 activates transistor 36 producing a reverse signal on line 39. Transistor 41 conducts to emit a reverse - acceleration signal on lead 42 and to block any forward signal over lead 37 to the motor control circuit. The motor thus drives the access mechanism at a controlled speed in the reverse direction. Transistor 32 is driven by the amplifier 15 to activate transistor 35 and produce a forward signal on line 37, turn off transistors 36 and 41, and activate transistor 38. The latter produces a forward-accelerating signal on lead 43 and prevents reverse signals being supplied to the motor control circuit. The motor slows down the motion of the access mechanism in the reverse direction until balance is restored between the velocity command input and the velocity feedback to the summing amplifier. When the difference signal drops, transistor 32 is cut off thus interrupting the signals from transistors 35, 38.
