    • A portable computer has a downstream USB 2.0 port, connected to a docking station of the invention via a USB cable having a Type A plug in the port and a Type B plug plugged into an upstream port in the docking station. This has a housing, in which is mounted hub circuitry, connected to the upstream port, a hard drive and a plurality of downstream ports. Peripheral devices are plugged into the ports. Thus the computer can enumerate and communicate with the hard drive and the peripheral devices.The peripheral device is touch-screen visual-display unit connected via a lead to a plug; whilst the peripheral devices are modules having internal circuitry with a plastics material case, which supports pin contacts in a rectangular array. Certain of the modules have antennae to enable them to communicate wirelessly.

    • A computer monitor has an input for receiving from a general-purpose computer a video signal representing a video image, a screen, and a driver for causing the screen to display a video image represented by a video signal. The monitor further includes storage for storing video and/or picture data, a processor for retrieving video and/or picture data from the storage means and producing a video signal therefrom, and a switch for switching the monitor between (i) a first “monitor” mode in which the driver causes the screen to display the video image represented by the signal received by the input and (ii) a second “media player” mode in which the driver causes the screen to display the video and/or picture image represented by the signal produced by the processor. This therefore provides the functionality of a media player in a computer monitor so that, when the monitor is not being used for displaying the video output from the general-purpose computer, it can be used instead as a media player, reducing number of the main pieces of equipment required, and enabling the general-purpose computer to be switched off and therefore to conserve energy when merely the media playing functions are required.

    • A power management method is disclosed. The power management method comprises the step of a computer system checking existence of a manufacturing identifier (ID) of a human interface device (HID) when the computer system is operated in a first mode; the computer system continuously detecting whether the HID exist when the manufacturing ID exists; the computer system starting a timer when the computer system detects that the HID does not exist; the computer system entering a second mode when the timer expires; the HID determining whether the computer system is operated in the second mode, when plugged into the computer system; the HID performing state transition on the computer system when determining that the computer system is in the second mode; and the computer system entering the first mode when detecting the state transition.

    • An illumination device and a method controlling the same are provided. The illumination device produces a pulse width modulation signal to control an illumination light source of the illumination device. The illumination light source is used to illuminate an environment. A driver of the illumination device provides a current to the illumination light source so the illumination light source emits light and a light detecting element of the illumination device detects a first brightness in the environment when the pulse width modulation signal is at high potential. The driver stops providing the current to the illumination light source and the light detecting element detects a second brightness in the environment when the pulse width modulation signal is at low potential. Thus, through a single light detecting element, two different levels of brightness in the illuminated environment are detected.
