    • 778,425. Rotary engines &c. TRIPP, G. H. Feb. 9, 1955 [Feb. 9. 1954], No. 3855/55. Class 110(2). Hydraulic rotary mechanism comprises a stator and a rotor having spaced pockets along the periphery elongated in the direction of rotation and of tapered depth which pockets communicate with intake passages in the stator spaced from exhaust ports to which liquid is urged by abutments slidable in slots in the stator, liquid under pressure urging the abutments into the pockets of the rotor. Fig. 1 shows reversible mechanism for transmitting the drive from a motor to the shafts and comprises a housing 17 with extensions 18, 19 in which are mounted the shafts 20, 21 extending into a casing 25 and carrying differential gears 22, 23 meshing with an idler 28. The idler 28 is mounted on a bearing 29 carried by the casing 25, on which drive-rings 30, 31 are rotatably mounted. The ring 30 has a flange 32 which may be connected to the casing 25 by a clutch, Fig. 2. Balls or rollers 34 in the periphery of the casing 25 engage the flange 32 when a brake band 36 is tensioned by linkage 40, 44 to prevent rotation of the ring 30 relative to the casing. A similar connection is provided for the ring 31, the two clutches being arranged to operate in opposite directions. The clutches are housed in a stationary annulus 46 having inwardlydirected flanges 47, 48 and an extension 49 passing through the housing 17 and connected to a. tube 51, the tube being connected to a fluid source such as a pump driven by the vehicle motor. The passage 50 through the extension 49 has two branches connecting with annular passages 52, 53 formed by matching grooves in the annulus 46 and rings 30, 31. Intake ports 54, Fig. 5, lead from the passages 52, 53 to recesses 55 in the juxtaposed walls of the ring 30, 31, the recesses being tapered and arranged in echelon. Each recess receives a vane 57 axially slidable in the neighbouring ring. Thus fluid under pressure enters the recesses through the ports 54 and impinging on the vanes 57 causes rotation of the rings 30, 31 together with the casing 25, the direction of rotation being determined by locking the appropriate ring 30 or 31 to the casing. As the casing 25 rotates the gear 28 transmits the drive to the shafts 20, 21. Ports in the passages 53 admit fluid to the vane housings to press the vanes outwards and fluid from the recesses 55 is exhausted through ports 59, Fig. 5, into the housing 17 and is returned to the source through an outlet 60, Fig. 1. A modification is described which is applicable to the driving of industrial machinery, the drive being irreversible.
