    • A control apparatus of an electric power steering apparatus capable of firmly detecting an abnormality of a torque detection value, caused by a drift occurred in a torque sensor and by a connector contact resistor, with a simple arrangement. A current supplied from a power supply flows through a potentiometer (3A) of a torque sensor (3), this current is supplied to a current detecting resistor (13g), a drift occurred in the torque sensor (3) is detected by a voltage across terminals of this resistor, the detected drift detection voltage V.sub.is is read in a microcomputer (21), and the drift detection voltage V.sub.is is compared with a set value to judge as to whether or not the drift is present within a normal range. The torque sensor is constructed of a main potentiometer (3.sub.M) and a sub-potentiometer (3.sub.S). A change amount .DELTA.V.sub.M is calculated from a difference between a presently detected value and a previously detected value of the torque detection voltage V.sub.2M of the main potentiometer. Also, a change amount .DELTA.V.sub.S as to the sub-potentiometer is similarly calculated. An abnormality of the torque detection value is judged in response to these change amounts .DELTA.V.sub.M and .DELTA.V.sub.S.

    • An electric power steering unit includes: a controller 4 for controlling a drive of an electric motor 16; and a terminal base 4B, which is provided in the controller 4, which constitutes a signal terminal of the controller 4, wherein the terminal base 4B fastens a terminal by means of fastening with a bolt. Terminals of pieces of harness 16A to 16C extending from the electric motor 16 are fastened to output terminals 23A to 23C on the terminal base 4B by means of fastening bolts. The electric power steering unit more preferably includes: a contact resistance detection member (35, 36, 37) for detecting a contact resistance between each output terminal 23A to 23C and each terminal TN of the harness 16A to 16C; and an electric current control member (21, 22) for controlling a drive current supplied to the electric motor 16 with detection information obtained by this detection member.

    • An electric power steering device enabled to surely detect a fault of its motor current detector circuit by avoiding the disturbance by an electrically insulated oxide film formed on the contact surface between the commutator and the brush of the motor. An ignition key is turned on, then the motor applied voltage is increased with time to break the oxide film so that the motor current flows normally. The estimated motor current is then compared with the detected motor current. When the absolute value of the difference between those estimated motor current and detected motor currents is over a predetermined limit value, it is determined that the motor current detection circuit is defective. It is also possible to break the oxide film by integrating each difference between the motor current command value and the detected motor current value, thereby increasing the current control value step by step and increase voltage applied to the motor.
