    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable electronic character display (timepiece or personal seal) capable of instantaneously displaying date or characters as recessed and projected characters by the program of a CPU set in the display and capable of providing text information or time information to a visually handicapped person, since a small readily perceivable display is needed as a device for assisting a visually handicapped person to live.
      SOLUTION: When the electronic character display unit receives information of a timepiece function portion which displays date information such as time or input character information from a built-in input section or an external input unit, the electronic character display converts the information to on-off current information of artificial muscles and displays the operating and stationary conditions of the artificial muscles as recessed and projected character information. In the case of recessed and projected numeric information, seven segments of artificial muscles display one numeric, and a complicated character is displayed by a collective using matrix-shaped dots.

    • A reproducing apparatus for reproducing from a medium on which voice and image signals are mixedly recorded in different areas comprises: a reproducing device to reproduce the signal by accessing each area on the medium; an instructing device to instruct the start of reproduction of the voice signal; and a controller for allowing the reproducing device to access to the area in which the voice signal is recorded in response to an instruction from the instructing device when the area which is accessed by the reproducing device is not the area in which the voice signal is recorded. The reproducing device includes: a reproducing head which is movable on the medium; a voice processor to process the reproduction output of the head as a voice signal; an image processor to process the reproduction output of the head as an image signal; and a control circuit for making either the voice processor or the image processor operative. With this apparatus, even if both of the voice and image signals mixedly recorded on a medium, the voice signal can be easily searched or changed in a short time by simple operations.
