摘要： If a program is reproduced on a thumbnail image screen in thumbnail image display, it is effective for judging whether the program is a desired program. A program desired by a user is viewed at a timing not intended by the user because important scenes are viewed beforehand on the thumbnail image display screen in some cases. The recording/reproducing apparatus is structured in such a manner that a thumbnail image display method can be automatically changed for each program in accordance with whether it is highly recognized that the program is viewed by a user.

摘要： Simultaneous recording of a digital content, which does not specify Copy Free, on recording medium of the same type is not authorized. Therefore, when a content that has been recorded by a recording/reproducing apparatus is being reproduced by the recording/reproducing apparatus, the content cannot be reproduced from the recording medium by any other reproducing apparatus. Moreover, when any other reproducing apparatus is used for reproduction, the content has to be moved from the recording/reproducing apparatus to the recording medium. This is inconvenient. In the recording/reproducing apparatus, data is recorded on one dismountable recording medium after it is encrypted using a local encryption key so that the data can be accessed by the recording/reproducing apparatus which has recorded the data. On the other recording medium, the data is recorded after it is encrypted without employment of the local encryption key so that the data can be accessed by any other reproducing apparatus.

摘要： A signal processing portion successively accepts frames of images from video information recorded on a recording medium acting as a dubbing source. The medium is one of a hard disc drive and a disc medium. Then, the processing portion recognizes face images from the frames of image, displays the recognized face images on the screen of an LCD, registers face images selected from the displayed face images in response to a manipulation of control buttons, creates thumbnail images from images which are included in the registered face images and which have appeared at ratios in excess of 70%, extracts images including the thumbnail images from the recording medium acting as the dubbing source, and dubs the extracted images onto the recording medium acting as a dubbing destination.

摘要： A recording and reproducing module records a signal (broadcast program) based on a first compression method to a recording medium, and during a period of time during which recording is not performed, reproduces the signal based on the first compression method, which has been recorded to the recording medium. Then, a transcoding module transcodes the signal based on the first compression method to a signal based on a second compression method. The signal based on the second compression method, whose transcoding has been completed, is recorded to the recording medium; and the signal based on the first compression method is erased from the recording medium. The controller refers to recording history information and sets a schedule including a target broadcast program to be transcoded and a time zone in which the target broadcast program is transcoded.
