Circulating or passing liquids through materials.-A pressure boiling-kier a in which liquor is circulated through the materials as by a pump e and external circuit p, p , is provided with means by which the circulation of liquor is intermittently stopped, and during the intervals steam under pressure is supplied to the upper part of the kier for the purpose of squeezing the materials.; the flow of liquor at the next stage condenses the steam, the resulting reduction in pressure serving to open up the material under treatment. The stopping and starting of the liquor-circulation and of the supply of steam are effected automatically. Thus, the clutch b controlling the motion of the pump e is actuated by a lever g connected to a bar q, to which also are connected the valves l, i of steam pipes k, y. The bar q is also connected to a lever t which is actuated bv the bent-over ends of a continuously-rotating two-armed lever x; the longer arm of this lever engages the upper arm of the lever t, and the shorter arm, the lower end of the lever t, whereby the lever t and the bar g are continuously reciprocated, with the result that the pump is alternately put into and out of action, and the valve l closed and opened respectively. The steam valve i is opened whenever the pump is in action, and the steam therefrom is supplied to a turbine z at the upper part of the kier and which distributes the liquor over the materials. A non-return valve o is fitted in the circulating system, and a bye-pass pipe m to the inlet side of the pump is provided so as more readily to permit circulation when the apparatus is started; thereafter it is closed.
