    • An online social networking system can be used to rank social network objects of various different object types, each according to its type. The objects may comprise types such as users, communities, blogs, blog entries, events, forums, forum topics, postings, photographs, and/or images. The product comprises code for carrying out a method that begins with receiving ranking data about social network objects that comprises data about events performed on the social network. For each social network object, a ranking function is applied to ranking data about the social network object based on its type. In addition, the recency of an event on the social network related to the social network object is evaluated, in order to calculate the score for the social network object. A relative ranking for each of the plurality of social network objects based on its score is determined, and the score and relative ranking of each of the social network objects stored.

    • Systems and methods for query expansion are described. In one aspect, new terms are extracted from a newly submitted query. Terms to expand the new terms are identified to a relevant document list. The expansion term are identified at least in part on the new terms and probabilistic correlations from information in a query log. The query log information includes one or more query terms and a corresponding set of document identifiers (IDs). The query terms were previously submitted to a search engine. The document IDs represent each document selected from a list generated by the search engine in response to searching for information relevant to corresponding ones of the query terms.

    • Similar queries are identified so that suggested search queries may be provided to a user. A first search query having at least one term associated with a semantic weight is received. A second query having at least one term associated with a semantic weight is received. A first vector is generated based on the first query and the at least one semantic weight of the first query, and a second vector is generated based on the second query and the at least one semantic weight of the second query. A similarity measurement between the first and second search queries is made based at least in part on a comparison of the first vector to the second vector.

    • A system and method for improved search relevance using proximity boosting. A query for a web search is received from a user, via a network, wherein the query comprises a plurality of query tokens. One or more concepts are identified in the query wherein each of concepts comprises at least two query tokens. A relative concept strength is determined for each of the identified concepts. The query is then rewritten for submission to a search engine wherein for each of the one or more concepts, a syntax rule associated with the respective relative concept strength of the concept is applied to the query tokens comprising the concept such that the rewritten query represents the one or more concepts whereby the proximity of the one or more concepts in a search result returned by the search engine to the user in response to the rewritten query is boosted.
