    • 13,194. Hunter, J. E. Aug. 23, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act; 1901]. Variable-speed gearing.-Relates to controlling- means for varying the ratio of the diameters of a pair of expanding pulleys 9, 10, as shown in Fig. 2, the shafts of which carry power - transmitting pulleys 6, 8, respectively, a connecting &c. clutch 7 being provided with the driving-pulley 6. The adjusting-means comprise two rotatable rods 12,13 carried between, and parallel to, the pulley shafts 3, 4 and controlling the expanding pulleys through pivoted links 14, 15. The rods are similarly screwthreaded, each rod having a right-hand thread along one half of its length and a left-hand thread along the other portion. To the respective threaded portions of each rod are fitted nuts 121, 131. These nuts are connected with thrust collars 16, mounted with washers 161 at the outer ends of the pulley bosses, through lever links 14, 15, which are pivoted in brackets 141, 151 carried by the supporting-frame 1. Upon the rod 12 is a chain-wheel 17 which is normally clamped by a screw 172. This wheel carries a chain 18 which serves as a convenient means for rotating the rod 12. It also carries a clutch member by which it is connected to a loose pinion 19 through which the pinion 20 and rod 13 are rotated, in the opposite direction to the rod 12. The rotation of the rods 12, 13 causes the nuts 121, 131 to travel longitudinally, operating the links 14, 15, the other ends of which approach or recede from the centre, thus causing the slidable members of one pulley to close together, while the tension of the belt causes the halves of the other pulley to separate. In order to regulate the tension of the belt, the rod 12 may be disconnected from the rod 13 by removing the clamping- screw 172, and sliding the chain-wheel 17 outwards to disconnect it from the pinion 19, the rod 12 being then rotated alone to adjust the diameter of the pulley 9. In some cases, one member of each expanding pulley may be fixed, the controlling- device being appropriately modified, and a single adjusting rod being employed if desired. The levers 14, 15 may also be replaced by simple movable arms.
