    • System and method for producing paper are provided. The system controls formation of wet stock comprising fibers on a moving water permeable wire of a de-watering machine (76) that has a refiner that is subject to a variable load and a headbox (74) having at least one slice, wherein each slice has an aperture through which wet stock is discharged at a certain stock jet speed onto the wire that is moving at a certain wire speed. The system includes: (a) at least two water weight sensors (84) that are positioned at different locations in the direction of movement of the wire and upstream from a dry line which develops during operation of the machine and the sensors generate signals indicative of a water weight profile made up of a multiplicity of water weight measurements (102); and (b) means (110) for adjusting at least one of the stock jet speed, wire speed, or to cause the water weight profile to match a preselected or optimal water weight profile.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both an apparatus for rapidly controlling the basis weight of a paper produced in a papermaking machine and a method for the control.
      SOLUTION: A principal part of a stock flows through a first line 55A controlled with a thick stock valve and then flows from a stock box 53 into a headbox 1. A secondary part of the stock is deflected through a second line 56A regulated by a second valve 56B. The thick stock valve is controlled by the basis weight in a dry part and the second valve 56B responds to measured values of the basis weight of the wet stock on a wire 7. The second line 56A and the control valve 56B form a close regulation loop at a quick response time together with the measured values of the basis weight in a wet part. On the other hand, the first line 55A and the control valve 55B responsive to the measured values of the basis weight in the dry part form a rough regulation loop.

    • A system of providing on-line turbulence measurements in a papermaking machine. The measurements are used to perform on-line adjustments to turbulence-inducing and adjusting elements in the papermaking machine to optimize final sheet product quality. Turbulence measurements are obtained using water weight sensors (23) in the wet end of the papermaking machine, specifically, under wire water weight measurements. Water weight readings are correlated to turbulence intensity levels. A turbulence processing sensor (25) sorts accumulated water weight measurement readings into intensity level intervals to obtain turbulence measurements or a turbulence profile. The trubulence measurements or profile is provided to a machine element controller (26) which uses the measured turbulence information and target turbulence information to generate control signals. Water weight sensors can obtain independent machine direction (MD) and cross machine direction (CD) water weight measurements and consequently independent turbulence measurements can be determined so that turbulence can be controlled in both directions. Machine elements are controlled so that turbulence remains uniform across the CD and so that the MD turbulence profile is optimized to resemble a target profile.
