    • A bright liquid crystal display such that the ligth absorption of the polarizing plate is low. The liquid crystal display is constituted of a liquid crystal display element provided with a pair of substrates (1a and 1b) facing each other at least one of which is transparent and provided with an electrode, a liquid crystal layer (2) held between the substrates (1a and 1b), and a voltage control means which changes the light transmittance of the layer (2) by applying a voltage to the electrode, a light source (7 and 8) which is positioned on the rear of the display element in the viewing direction, a polarizing and separating element (5) which transmits a single polarized light component of the light from the light source and reflects the other polarized light component and is provided between the display element and the light source and a depolarizer (6) which disperses an arbitrary polarized light component into a plurality of polarized light components and is provided between the element (5) and the light source.
