    • Electronic devices may be provided with antennas. The antennas may include conductive antenna cavities. Antenna resonating elements may be mounted in the antenna cavities to form cavity antennas. An antenna cavity may be formed from metal structures with curved edges that define a curved cavity opening. A flexible printed circuit substrate may be coated with a layer of metal. Slot antenna structures such as a directly fed antenna slot and a parasitic antenna slot may be formed from openings in the metal layer. The flexible printed circuit substrate may be flexed so that the antenna resonating element forms a non-planar curved shape that mates with the opening of the antenna cavity. A ring of solder may be used to electrically seal the edges of the cavity opening to the metal layer in the antenna resonating element. The curved opening may be aligned with curved housing walls in an electronic device.

    • Handheld electronic devices are provided that contain wireless communications circuitry having at least one antenna. The antenna may have a planar ground element and a planar resonating element. The planar ground element may have a rectangular shape that matches a rectangular housing shape for a handheld electronic device. A dielectric-filled slot may be formed in one end of the planar ground element. The planar resonating element may be located above the slot. The antenna may be a hybrid antenna that contains both a slot antenna structure formed from the slot and a planar inverted-F structure formed from the planar resonating element and the planar ground element. The antenna may be fed using a single transmission line or two transmission lines. With two transmission lines, one transmission line may be associated with the slot antenna structure and one transmission line may be associated with the planar inverted-F antenna structure.

    • Broadband antennas and handheld electronic devices with broadband antennas are provided. A handheld electronic device has a housing in which electrical components such as integrated circuits and a broadband antenna are mounted. The broadband antenna has a ground element and a resonating element. The resonating element has two arms of unequal length and a self-resonant element. The antenna has a feed terminal connected to the self-resonant element and a ground terminal connected to the ground element. The self-resonant element is near-field coupled to one of the arms of the resonating element. With one suitable arrangement, the self -resonant element may be formed using a conductive rectangular element that is not electrically shorted to the ground element or the arms of the resonating element. The antenna operates over first and second frequency ranges of interest.

    • An antenna and a method for using the antenna in a wireless appliance are provided. The antenna includes a conducting surface having a length and a width; a dielectric slit having a slit length portion oriented along either the length or the width, the slit forming two lips on the conducting surface; the slit having an opening on one of the length and the width, the opening having a flare size; a feed-point element connecting the two lips; wherein the dimensions of the length, the width, the slit length portion, and the flare size are smaller than an effective propagation wavelength of the RF radiation in the antenna. An antenna including a conducting surface having a conductive plate with a plate area defined by a plate perimeter overlaying a portion of a conducting surface is also provided. A method to provide an antenna as above is also disclosed.

    • Electronic devices are provided that contain wireless communications circuitry. The wireless communications circuitry may include radio-frequency transceiver circuitry and antenna structures. A parallel- fed loop antenna may be formed from portions of an electronic device bezel and a ground plane. The antenna may operate in multiple communications bands. An impedance matching circuit for the antenna may be formed from a parallel-connected inductive element and a series- connected capacitive element. The bezel may surround a peripheral portion of a display that is mounted to the front of an electronic device. The bezel may contain a gap. Antenna feed terminals for the antenna may be located on opposing sides of the gap. The inductive element may bridge the gap and the antenna feed terminals. The capacitive element may be connected in series between one of the antenna feed terminals and a conductor in a transmission line located between the transceiver circuitry and the antenna.

The housing has a planar inner surface. A broadband antenna for the handheld electronic device has a ground element and a resonating element. The ground element and resonating element may have the same shape and may have the same size. The ground element and resonating element may lie in a common plane and be separated by a gap that lies in the common plane. The plane in which the ground element and resonating element lie may be parallel to the planar inner surface of the housing. Electronic components such as the integrated circuits, display, and battery can be mounted in the handheld device so that they do not overlap the gap between the ground element and the resonating element.
