    • 479,777. Metal-melting furnaces. HENLEY EXTRUSION MACHINE CO., Ltd., and DUNSHEATH, P. Aug. 14, 1936, No. 22443. [Class 51 (ii)] A furnace 1 for melting metals in a non-oxidizing atmosphere is charged with ingots 2 through 1 a lock chamber 10 having inner and outer doors 3, 11, the air which enters the chamber 10 when the outer door is opened, being, before the inner door is opened, ejected and replaced by non-oxidizing gas. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the non-oxidizing gas is admitted at 18 and escapes at 13, an igniter 14 being provided so that completion' of the scavenging of the chamber 10 is indicated by ignition of the escaping gas. Entry of air past the operating-rod 17 of the door 3 is prevented by maintaining a trickle supply of gas through a pipe 15. In cases where the lock chamber is at a dangerously high temperature, it is placed in communication with an evacuating device or scavenged by inert gas before the non-oxidizing gas is supplied. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which the action of opening the outer door 11 automatically actuates a valve 20 to connect the chamber 10 to an evacuating plant, the non-oxidizing gas being automatically delivered, when the pressure has fallen to a predetermined degree, through a spring-loaded valve 30. Incorporated in this valve is a small needle valve which maintains a trickle supply through pipe 36 to the housing 16 of the rod 17 and through pipe 35 to the interior of the lock chamber 10. To minimize the effect of any explosion that may occur, the doors 3, 11 are fitted with insets 37 of mechanically weak material. The non- oxidizing gas employed in the melting chamber preferably consists of a mixture of an oxidereducing gas and a commercial inert gas which has been pre-treated by being subjected to high temperature and/or an ionizing electric discharge. Specifications 458,089 and 478,278 are referred to.

    • 478,278. Squirting. HENLEY EXTRUSION MACHINE CO., Ltd., and DUNSHEATH, P. July 18, 1936, No. 19959. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for feeding ingots to a metal-melting furnace 65 supplying, for example, a continuous extrusion machine 77, comprises a cylindrical magazine 1 fitted with a series of inclined ingot-carriers 4 and rotatable step-by-step about a vertical axis to bring the carriers successively into a position in which the ingot is released. The released ingot may pass directly to the furnace or, as shown, is trans. ferred thereto by the cradle 55 of an endlesschain elevator 40 driven by a reversible motor 101, the magazine being operated in timed relationship with the elevator by means of .a quadrant gear which reciprocates a rod 99, Fig. 2, connected to an oscillating arm 25, the latter carrying a pawl 26 which engages with teeth 24 on a driving disc 23 secured to the vertical shaft 20 of the magazine. The ingots 11 are retained in the carriers 4 by stirrups 12 having extension pieces 14 which run in a guide channel 15, this channel being recessed at the release point 27 to permit the stirrup to move inwardly. This movement is effected by a bellcrank lever 28, 31 actuated by a projection 91 on the ascending portion of one of the elevator chains 56. When the cradle 55 reaches the upper limit of its travel, the ingot slides off into a lock chamber 70 provided at the upper end of the furnace 65, this chamber having inner and outer sliding doors 71, 74 actuated respectively by an engine 73 and by the movement of the cradle 55. An electric control system is described by which the movements of the magazine 1, elevator 40, and lock-chamber doors 71, 74 are automatically effected in correctly timed sequence, the control system having incorporated therein a switch 113 actuated in accordance with the rise and fall of the molten metal level in the furnace by a float 118 working in a chamber 119 communicating with the melting chamber. Specification 458,089, [Group XII], is referred to.
