[Class 64 (i)] In a gas-fired water heater comprising a heat exchanger a, having a surrounding water pipe b, and through which the products of combustion pass from a burner d to a flue f, the exchanger is mounted in a sheet metal casing g formed with a vertical passage h, which is open at the top and bottom and is provided with a lateral opening j leading into a chamber e between said exchanger and the flue, and the chamber e is fitted with a baffle and deflectors k, m which are adapted normally to permit the combustion gases to flow freely into the flue but which will cause them to flow into said passage h and through the bottom or top openings thereof if a down-draught occurs or the flue becomes blocked respectively. The passage is preferably of rectangular cross-section, and it may be formed either by securing a channel-shaped metal pressing to the rear wall of the casing or by pressing a channel in the wall of the casing and closing it by a welded-on, &c., cover plate.

[Class 44.] A locking device applicable for example to the cap of the fuel tank, the radiator cap, the bonnet, or the spare tyre of a motor vehicle, is released by the vacuum in the inlet manifold, the parts thus being locked automatically when the car is standing with the engine stopped. The lock comprises a body 11, Fig. 4, or 17 , Fig. 7, and a sliding plunger 13 or 131 which is projected outwards by a spring and is withdrawn by vacuum in the chamber 18 or 18 , connected with the inlet manifold by the pipe 23. The lock shown in Fig. 4 may be fitted in the neck of the fuel tank as shown at 11, Fig. 2. The cap 10, Fig. 6, makes a bayonetjoint with the neck, bevelled wings 9 in the cap passing over and beyond the plunger 13. The plunger 13 closes upon a seat 20 and prevents passage of fuel into the pipe 23 whilst the engine is running. The lock shown in Fig. 7 is applicable to the bonnet or spare tyre.

    • A rare gas illumination system and method are configured to provide a sweeping illumination effect. In one embodiment, the rare gas illumination system includes a tube containing a gas and having a first electrode at a first end and a second electrode at a second end. A first boot having a first transformer is coupled to the first end of the tube. A second boot having a second transformer is coupled to the second end of the tube. The system includes a controller having a microcontroller, a memory, and an output power driver. The memory is configured to store a plurality of control codes corresponding to a plurality of illumination patterns. The microcontroller controls the illumination pattern of the tube by executing the corresponding control code to selectively activate the output driver to provide a voltage signal to at least one of the first boot and the second boot. The corresponding transformer steps up the provided voltage signal to excite at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode, thereby illuminating the gas within the tube.
