    • 436,203. Arc lamps. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd., Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex, and THOMAS, H. L., 63, Iffley Road, Hammersmith, London. Jan. 4, 1934, No. 342. [Class 39 (i)] To shorten the time required to strike the arc in lamps of the type in which the position of the negative electrode is automatically controlled according to the voltage across the arc by means of a pair of pawls intermittently operated so as to engage oppositely disposed ratchet wheels on a spindle driving the electrode holder and serving respectively to advance and retract the negative electrode, one of the pawls is adapted when the current is switched on to actuate a linkwork which translates the negative electrode bodily towards the positive electrode to strike the arc. Preferably, the backward feeding pawl is formed with a projection which engages the linkwork when the arc is not burning. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention applied to the arc lamp described in Specification 358,542. The feed screw 72 of the negative electrode is fed through gear-wheels 80, 81 by the spindle 82 which carries opposed ratchet wheels 83, 84 with which two pawls 85, 86 are adapted respectively to engage. A reciprocating motion is imparted to the pawls by a motor-driven disc 25, Fig. 2, with a crank-pin 26. A guide-member 90, controlled by the solenoid 93 in parallel with the arc, determines the engagement of the pawls. When the supply is switched on, the projection 95 on the fully-extended pawl 86 (dotted position) engages one end of a link mechanism ending in the cupshaped member 98, which advances the feedscrew and brings the electrodes into contact. When the arc is struck, the voltage across the electrodes falls and the pawl 86 returns to its normal position, the working of the lamp being then as described in Specification 358,542. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, the negative electrode is fed forward by rollers actuated by a feed shaft 105 through a universal joint 109. The spindle 82 slides in a recess in the end of the shaft 105, but rotates it through a pin and slot connection. As before, a projection on the pawl 86 is adapted to actuate the linkwork 96, 101 ... 104, the member 104 engaging the end 108 of shaft 105 through a pin and slot connection. The shaft 105 is raised and tilts the whole electrode holder about the pivot 100, bringing the electrodes into contact.
