    • Methods for modulating immune responses, such as IgE responses and autoimmune responses, are provided. The methods involve contacting a cell with an agent comprising multivalent lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT), which modulates an immune response. The methods are useful for enhancing production of non-specific polyclonal IgE, inhibiting production of antigen-specific IgE responses, inducing cytokine production, and stimulating proliferation of splenocytes. In a preferred embodiment, the invention provides methods for modulating an immune response to an antigen (e.g., an allergan) in vivo . Pharmaceutical compositions for modulating immune responses comprising the agents of the invention are also provided. The invention also provides for treatment or prevention of shock in a subject using multivalent LNnT and methods for treating an autoimmune disease in a subject using multivalent LNnT. Still further the invention provides for treatment of cancer in a subject using monovalent LNnT.

    • Methods for modulating immune responses are provided. The methods involve contacting an immune cell with an agent that modulates interaction of a compound comprising a Lewis antigen with the immune cell such that production by the immune cell of at least one cytokine that regulates development of a T helper type 1 or T helper type 2 response is modulated. In one embodiment, the agent is a stimulatory form of a compound comprising a Lewis antigen, such as a Lewis , Lewis or Lewis oligosaccharide, or a derivative thereof. In another embodiment, the agent is an inhibitory form of a compound comprising a Lewis antigen, such as a Lewis , Lewis or Lewis oligosaccharide, or a derivative thereof. In various embodiments, the immune cell is a human immune cell, a macrophage, a T cell or a non-T, non-B spleen cell. In a preferred embodiment, the invention provides methods of stimulating a specific immune response to an antigne in vivo using a stimulatory agent of the invention. In another preferred embodiment, the invention provides methods for inhibiting allergic responses in vivo using an inhibitory agent of the invention. Pharmaceutical compositions for modulating immune responses comprising the stimulatory or inhibitory agents of the invention are also provided.
