    • A received signal of interest is processed by determining timing of interference spikes in the received signal of interest. Receivers can determine when certain types of interference spikes are expected to occur, e.g., based on when different users are scheduled to transmit data during an overlapping portion of the same transmission time interval. The interference timing information is used by the receiver to soft scale signal values recovered from the received signal of interest that coincide with the interference spikes separately from remaining ones of the signal values. This way, fast changing interference power can be accurately tracked during periods of known interference spikes while also accurately tracking slower changing interference power during other periods.

    • The present invention provides a method which performs an estimation of a SIR as basis for transmit power control. The SIR estimation is performed for a radio signal (u) which is transmitted from a transmitter (35) to a receiver (43) over a radio channel (37). A channel estimate h and a combining weight w are first obtained (83). Then an estimated SIR value is generated (85) based at least in part on the channel estimate h and the combining weight w. The estimated SIR value is generated such that it equals a first estimated SIR value multiplied by a numerical factor. The numerical factor is dependent on the channel estimate h and the combining weight w in a manner such that it attains a minimum value whenever the channel estimate h and the combining weight w are linearly dependent. The invention also comprises devices for carrying out the method.

    • Channel estimation accuracy is improved by adjusting the power level of a physical control channel allocated to a receiver based on the transmission rate and/or transport format of a corresponding physical data channel allocated to the same receiver. The physical control channel may be a DPCCH, E-DPCCH or other type of physical control channel allocated to a receiver for facilitating uplink or downlink communication. In one embodiment, control channel symbols are transmitted for use in channel estimation by adjusting the power level of a physical control channel allocated to a receiver based on the transmission rate and/or transport format of a physical data channel allocated to the receiver (200). Control channel symbols are transmitted to the receiver over the physical control channel at the adjusted power level (202). The receiver uses the control channel symbols to perform channel estimation (204).
