Class 4 [Also in Group XXXVIII] ' The rudder 24 of a model aircraft, Fig. 3, is controlled remotely by sending electric impulses (see Group XXXVIII) to energize a solenoid 22 which releases an escapement wheel 40 permitting a stranded rubber motor 38 to rotate a shaft 32 through 90 degrees at each energization. The shaft rocks the rudder 24 through a crank 30 and wire 26, cyclically to the left-centre-right-centre-left &c. positions upon successive impulses. The elevators may be controlled by a similar arrangement. In such a case, to ensure that one control surface is in its central position while the other is being operated, alternate arms 48 of the escapement wheel 40, Fig. 5, are bent out of the plane of the other two 49. When the solenoid pawl 50 engages a flat arm 49 switch contacts 52, 54 are opened by the arm these contacts being closed when a bent arm 48 is operative. The switches 52, 54 for the two controls are connected in series and so arranged Fig. 6 (not shown) that if one control surface is central operation of the other does not effect it. A single control surface may be moved in either . direction by using two wheels 73, 74, Fig. 7, escapement released as in Fig. 3. An endless cord passes round the wheels 73, 74 and pulleys 76, 77 carried on a plate 78 pivoted at 80. Release of either wheel 73, 74 then rocks the plate 78 in a corresponding direction and actuates the control surface through a link 82.
