    • A vessel for carrying a liquid cargo having a density less than that of the water supporting the vessel is provided with internal transverse and longitudinal bulkheads defining chambers of a total cargo storage space. A horizontal safety bulkhead extends longitudinally and transversely of the vessel and is connected to the sides, the end and intermediate transverse bulkheads and the longitudinal bulkheads, thereby forming the available liquid cargo storage space into a plurality of inner and outer upper and lower cells. This horizontal safety bulkhead is located to be below a predetermined waterline corresponding to a fully loaded condition of the ship, preferably at a distance between 5 ft. and 10 ft. below the waterline. Each of the upper and lower cells is individually vented to atmosphere. A suction pump applies suction to a suction line connected through one-way valves individually communicating with each of the inner and outer lower cells through openings in the horizontal safety bulkhead defining the same. The suction pump and the suction line are located between the waterline and the horizontal safety bulkhead to facilitate quick charging of the suction line with liquid cargo when the suction pump is operated. Rupture of the bottom or the side of the vessel at one of the lower cells at a point below the waterline is countered by operation of the suction pump and is assisted by the presence of a water head outside the rupture.

    • A spill free clean out type sink trap includes a cover sealingly and detachably mounted on a container and, in one embodiment, respective individual inlet and outlet conduits are spaced apart laterally from one another. The conduits both project downwardly below the cover into the container in which case, during use, the water level in the container is spaced from the cover. This is an air space of sufficient volume to receive and hold the liquid, normally retained in the conduits, when the seal between the cover and container is broken. In another embodiment, inlet and outlet conduits are concentric and the outlet conduit projects into a further conduit to an extent such that the lower open end thereof is below the normal liquid level. The further conduit projects sufficently downwardly into the container such that the liquid free volume in the container is greater than the volume of liquid contained in the lower end of the inlet conduit and the further conduit.

    • A low liquid level sensor in a hot water heating system permitting testing operability thereof in situ without draining down the system. The sensor is located in a cavity that has an opening in the bottom thereof in fluid communication with the liquid in the vessel during normal operation of the system. The end of the opening is at a lower elevation than the sensor and liquid from the vessel is in the cavity during normal operation of the system. When the liquid drops to a predetermined low level the sensor activates the safety cut-off. Valved passed means are provided exteriorly of the vessel so that a gas can be injected into the cavity to pressurize the same and drive the liquid in the cavity through the opening into the vessel simulating a low water level condition. At the simulated low water level condition operability of the sensor can be determined. Means are provided to release the gas from the cavity. The sensor is mounted by an insulator that projects into the cavity and the gas release means is spaced from the end of the cavity so that an air pocket is maintained reducing the tendency of conductive deposits to build up on the insulator. A fail safe circuit is provided avoiding malfunctioning of the cut-off safety control should there be a large build up of conductive deposits on the insulator.
