    • Disclosed are surface sections for creating a non-slip or minimal slippage surface. The surface section includes a plate, a plurality of plate apertures, at least one elevator, a plurality of pegs, and a plurality of couplers to couple the pegs to the plate. Each of the plurality of pegs is at least partially located within, and aligned with, one of the plate apertures. Each coupler couples one of the plurality of pegs to the plate in a normal, extended state in which at least a portion of the peg is extended above the upwardly facing surface of the plate. Each coupler allows each of the plurality of pegs to move within its respective plate aperture to a non-extended state upon application of pressure to the peg. When the pressure is removed, the coupler moves the peg back to its normal, extended state.

    • Three separate input beams of light can be combined in a photorefractive material and outputs one signal. Each of the three input beams can carry information, for example, by passing each input beam through a glass slide with opaque lettering. The message may be segmented and a portion of it placed in each input beam for security reasons. Only the output beam contains the full message. Further, the invention can be used as an all-optical three-input AND gate. A signal is only produced when all three beams of light are present.

    • The present invention consists of two right angle prisms, one of which is coated with a wedged layer of low index of refraction transparent material such as magnesium fluoride. The coating varies in thickness, linearly, for example, from about 50 to 700 nanometers, for example. The prisms are cemented together forming a rectangular cube beamsplitter. The beamsplitter is then mounted onto a stage so that the plane of the cemented surfaces is parallel to the axis of translation. As one translates the cube along its axis, the ratio of reflectance to transmittance varies according to the thickness or other factors.
