    • A method for mating optical fibers, a fiber optic connector, and a fiber optic subassembly are provided in which mating fibers(10, 50) have angled end faces (12, 52) joined by index matching fluid (80), but in which the angled end faces of the fibers are positioned relative to one another in rotationally misaligned relationship. Applicants discovered unexpectedly that optical fibers can be spliced, to provide satisfactory optical connections, without the need for matched cleaves, and without the need for precise rotational alignment of the cleaves, provided that angled end faces are provided on both the launch and receive fibers and that index matching gel is provided between the angled end faces. Thus, the fibers are mated in positions other than in the precise rotationally aligned position previously believed essential to adequate optical performance. Angled end faces may be positioned less than 165 degrees out of phase.

    • A method for preparing a ferrule assembly avoids polishing while providing adequate control over fiber end protrusion and co-planarity. A distal end (122) of the fiber (120a) is prepared before securing the fiber in a pathway (124a) of the ferrule body (124), and before or after inserting the fiber into the ferrule. The prepared fiber is manipulated to provide a desired spatial relationship between the fiber end (122a) and the ferrule's end face (126), and then secured to maintain the desired spatial relationship. Preferably, the fiber end (122) is prepared using a laser cleaving technique to provide a suitable end without abrasive polishing. An interferometer (220) may be used to obtain measurements, during manipulation of the prepared fiber within the ferrule, that indicate whether the prepared fiber is satisfactorily positioned. In accordance with other aspects of the invention, a ferrule assembly prepared in accordance with the method, and a connector or other optical package including such a ferrule assembly are provided.
