    • 1404151 Constructing domed buildings of foamed material R GRAY 28 July 1972 [30 July 1971 18 Jan 1972] 35990/71 and 2450/72 Headings E1A and E1S A dome-shaped building is cast in a foamed material by a travelling mould 2 which comprises a pair of parallel articulated shutters 6 having a double curvature, foaming reactants being fed through a travelling nozzle into the front of the mould which moves at a speed such that solid foamed material is left by the rear of the mould to form part of the shelf of the dome. The curvature of the shutters is changed as the mould is elevated towards the apex of the dome, laying superimposed rings of foamed material. The mould may be mounted on a rotatable arm 3 pivoted at the base of a central mast, for a hemispherical dome (Fig 13, not shown); or it may be mounted on a short arm or a trolley which runs along a beam shaped as a quadrant of an ellipse and rotatable around the central mast, for a hemi-ellipsoidal dome (Fig 15, not shown) The arm is retractable so that the mould may be lowered through an opening left at the apex of the dome, which opening is then covered with a cap. The shutters may comprise relatively rotatable convex or concave spherical segments and intermediate pieces (Fig 18, not shown) and are connected by yokes. The shutters may be elastic to permit flexing, and a fluted dome may be formed by deflecting the shutters along a wavy path as the mould rotates, by yokes connected to cam followers engaging a corrugated cam surface on the central mast, (Fig 22, not shown). Foil sheets 8 may be fed into the mould from rolls 9 mounted at the front, to line the shutters and to be applied to the surfaces of the building. Arrangments of several interconnected domes are described Figs 10 and 11, not shown).
