[Class 20(iii)] In a sash balance of the kind comprising a helical spring 17 in a tubular element which is rotated by movement of the window, the tubular element comprises inner and outer members 5 and 6, each having a spiral longitudinal slot 7 and 8, the inner member also having a spiral rib 9 disposed within the slot of the outer member and the outer member having a spiral groove 10 disposed within the spiral slot of the inner member, two helical tracks being thus provided. Each member may be formed of a grooved spirally coiled strip with the edges spaced to form the helical slots. As shown, the tubular member is mounted in a groove on the side of the sash, and passes through an annular member 23 having an inward projection 27 engaging with the helical groove-like track 11 and provided with an attaching arm 24 having a recess engaging the helical rib 9, the tubular member being thus caused to rotate on movement of the window. The spring 17 is held at its lower end on the fixed rod 18 and at its upper end on a torsion rod 15 having a ratchet head 16 coacting with a ratchet fixed in the top of the tube. Depression of rod 15 against the action of the spring disengages the ratchet and allows the spring to be tensioned.

[Class 20(iii)] Means for balancing a window sash by helica springs includes a tubular element 4 having a helica groove or slot 5 and containing a coiled spring 16 which is attached to rods 15 and 17 passing througl bushings 6, 9 respectively. The rod 15 carries a ratchet head 12 engaging ratchet teeth 7 on the bushing 6, so that by rotation of the head 12 by the rod 10, the tension of the spring may be adjusted. The lower end of the bushing 6 is rotatably mounted in a bracket 25 secured in the groove 3 of the sash 2 and the rod 17 (see Fig. 4) is pivoted to a second bracket 22 also attached to the sash 2. The tube 4 passes through bracket 36 attached to the fixed frame 1 of the window and having lugs which engage in the helical groove 5 to cause rotation of the tube as the sash is moved.
