    • An adjuster for brake wear compensation . Known brake adjusters introduce frictional forces by their adjustment technique which are variable and an undesirably large percentage of the brake application force. The invention includes a casing (16) affixed to a brake housing (14). Maintained within the casing and operative between the ends thereof is a spring follower (20). A hollow tubular member (28) is received within the spring follower and in contacting engagement with one end (23) thereof. A shaft (30) passes through the tubular member (28) and is connected at a first end to the brake system pressure plate (12) and is characterized at the other end by a swage (40). The swage is of a perimeter substantially equivalent to the inside circumference of the tubular member. However, the swage (40) and tubular member (28) are of different geometrical configuration, with square swage (40) having round edges (48). As brake wear compensation is made, the pressure plate (12) draws the swage through the tubular member and reshapes the same without stretching or enlarging the tubular member itself. Thus, minimal force is required by the adjustment technique with such force being relatively constant and predictable.

    • The invention pertains to the art of braking systems specifically for use in aircraft which invention is directed to minimizing the problem of the frictional forces inherent in standard types of brake adjusters. In order to minimize the problem of frictional forces, the invention provides a brake adjuster (10) wherein a solid (30) or fluted (44) rod is connected between the return mechanism (20) and the pressure plate (12) of the brake adjuster (10). The rod (30;44) passes through a draw ring (26) of slightly less diameter than the major diameter of the rod (30;44). The rod (30;44) is drawn through the draw ring (26) under the force imparted by the pressure plate (12) on brake wear action, the draw ring (26) swaging and reshaping the rod (30;44) as the rod (30;44) extends to compensate for brake wear.

    • In the field of brakes, adjusters are required to maintain a constant clearance between engaging parts, even upon wear. The problem with known brake adjusters is that they introduce frictional forces by their adjustment technique which are variable and an undesirably large percentage of the brake application force. The adjuster of this application draws a broach (42) through a tube (28) thereby eliminating the above noted problem. A casing (16) is fixedly secured to a brake housing (14) and receives therein a spring follower (20). Engaged within the spring follower (20) is a tubular member (28). Passing through the tubular member (28) is a shaft (30) which is fixedly secured to a pressure plate (12) and maintains a multi-sided broach (42) on one end. The broach (42) has contacting engagement with the interior surface of the tube (28) and upon successive brake applications, cuts portions of the inner wall of the tube (28) allowing the shaft (30) to telescope from the casing (16).

A problem with prior adjustment devices is that they may not release the brakes because of the relationship between the static and dynamic coefficients of friction between their parts and the functioning of return spring mechanisms. The adjuster of this application draws a tube (32) through a die (48) thereby eliminating the noted problem relative to the coefficients of friction. A shaft or pin (36) is connected to the pressure plate (12) of a brake assembly and is interconnected with a reshapable tube (32). The shaft (36) and tube (32) pass through a die (48) which makes swaging engagement with the tube (32). As the brake wears, the tube (32) is drawn through the die (48) and is progressively swaged along the length thereof, The spring follower (20) acts against the die (48) to urge the die (48), tube (32) and shaft (36) to a return position following release of brake pressure.
