    • 1,094,623. Planing. M. MATTIOLI, D. MATTIOLI and G. MATTIOLI [trading as SOCIETA FRATELLI MATTIOLI PIETRO, DANILO E GIANCARLO S.N.C.]. Oct. 1, 1964 [Oct. 3, 1963], No. 40028/64. Headings B3B, B3C and B3L. A punch-, and die-, cutting machine comprises a tool-holder 21 on an arcuate slide 61 having an axis horizontally disposed above a work support 6, the slide being mounted on a carriage 15 reciprocable along vertical or oblique paths. The work support 6 is rotatable by an electric motor on a compound slide 5, 2. The slide 5 can be fed intermittently in synchronism with the tool 20. The tool-carriage guide 14 is angularly adjustable on a head 13 which can be swung through 180‹ to bring a second tool-holder 78 into operation. The holder 78 is rotated by a motor 7 through a clutch 75. The motor 7, through an infinitely variable belt-drive 8 and a gear-box 9, also rotates a cam 11 having grooves 19, 23 which respectively reciprocate the carriage 15 and oscillate the tool-holder on its arcuate guide. The groove 19 is engaged by a follower (24) on a lever pivoted on a shaft (25). The lever has a groove 27 to receive an adjustable block (28) pivoted to a sliding block engaging an arm 17 secured to the slide 15, the arm being connected to a counter-balance spring (37). By rotating a handwheel (26) on the shaft (25), the block (28) is adjusted to vary the tool-stroke; to adjust the limits of the stroke, the slide 17 is unclamped and adjusted by a shaft 34 and a screw 36. The groove 23 is engaged by a follower 38 on a lever 39 rocking on a pivot 40 and connected by sliding blocks to a lever 43. A pantograph bar 46 connected to the lever 43 moves a roller-slide 55 to pivot a lever 52 around a pivot 53 to raise a block 58 sliding in the end of the lever. The block 58 is pivoted to the tool slide 61 and causes it to move round the arcuate guides 22 on each side of the slide. The lowest position of the holder 60 is determined by stops 64 and 65, the latter of which is engaged by a stop 66 on the holder. These stops take the cutting forces whilst a straight portion of a punch is cut before the cam 23 causes a radiussed cut to be taken at the base of the die profile. The radius of a cut to be made is determined by the setting of the tool 20. To cut the inner surface of a die, a modified tool and holder 69, 70, Fig. 8, are fitted. To flare a die, the tool-carriage guide 14 is set over.
