摘要： A method (100; 200) and apparatus (230) for controlling a display of video being output from a set-top box determines (102) if a user selected channel contains programming having a first aspect ratio and stretches (106) automatically video from the user selected channel having the first aspect ratio, if the user selected channel contains programming having the first aspect ratio, to fill a frame having a second aspect ratio that is different than the first aspect ratio using a predetermined stretching function. This determining and stretching is initiated automatically upon tuning (101) to a user-selected channel. According to another aspect of the present invention, an exemplary embodiment (200) of a method for controlling video output from a set-top box, upon receiving a zoom toggle command from a user via a remote control unit, the method determines (202) if a user-selected program includes a second aspect ratio different than a first aspect ratio and ignores (205) the zoom toggle command if the programming does not include the second aspect ratio. If the programming does include the second aspect ratio, then the method selects (206; 208) a next available zoom mode for a first or second aspect ratio television type if the television type setting is set for the first or second aspect ratio, respectively, and sets (207; 210) an output format to a mode specified by a first predetermined output setting.

摘要： Simultaneous display of multiple audio/video (AV) programs transmitted over a digital link (106) is described. At a source device (102), at least one non-composited digital transport stream is generated from the plurality of AV programs. The at least one non-composited digital transport stream is augmented with control information. The control information is operative to invoke simultaneous display of the plurality of AV programs on a display device (124). The at least one non-composited digital transport stream is then transmitted as augmented over the digital link (106). At a sink device (104), at least one non-composited digital transport stream having the plurality of AV programs is received over the digital link (106). Control information is extracted from the at least one non-composited digital transport stream. The plurality of AV programs are identified within said non-composited digital transport stream in response to the control information. The identified AV programs are then simultaneously displayed on the display device (124).

摘要： A system and method for time shifting traditional radio broadcast signals by selectively recording portions of a traditional radio broadcast signal for playback at subsequent pre-selected times or intervals (100) is disclosed. The present system and method provides for a selection recognition engine (106) which constantly monitors traditional broadcast radio signals via an audio tuner for pre-defined recording triggers, such as voice recognition, signalling tone, or pre-defined time. When a pre-defined recording triggers occurs, the selection recognition engine (106) begins recording desired portions of the traditional radio broadcast, at a pre-selected frequency associated with the pre-defined recording trigger, to an audio capture memory (108). The duration of the recording may preferably be a fixed duration, e.g., one minute, or until a pre-defined recording stop trigger. The current digital audio stream is then interrupted for playback of the recorded portion of the traditional radio broadcast signal at the pre-selected times or intervals.

摘要： A communications system (10) for processing video signals in a video-on-demand service employs centralized transcoding in a way that a relatively small amount of transcoding equipment (15) is required, as opposed to transcoding every transport stream. In addition, the embodiments of the present invention do not require transitions from non-transcoded sessions to transcoded sessions. According to one aspect of the present invention, bandwidth is reserved at the node groups (14a-c) for transcoded services, and transcoding is initiated before the node group (14a-c) exceeds its assigned bandwidth. This method provides the opportunity to add additional transcoded services and start decreasing bandwidth allocations to individual channels or services without interrupting existing sessions.

摘要： In a cable return path system, a method for performing digital companding adds a predetermined offset to the digital value to be companded, and employs a modified µ-law or a-law companding technique to obtain a reduced bit length digital value. One embodiment of this modified approach adds a predetermined offset (e.g., 129 for a 12-bit implementation) to the digital value before companding and then employs a two-bit chord and a 5-bit step for the 12-bit implementation. The end result is that the performance metrics are not significantly compromised by this bit reduction when compared to current transmission methods without this technique.
