    • A method of disintegrating wood intended for the production of pulp is characterized in that the wood is subjected to a cleavage-producing compression acting substantially perpendicular to the direction of the fibres. The compression is preferably carried out on fresh wood the water content of which is not more than 15% below the standard Specification for newly felled timber. The compression may be performed in a hydraulic press or an excentre operated crushing mill or by rolling or it may be performed by hammering or stamping to produce stresses exceeding the breaking strength of the wood. The compression may be carried out on wood, from which the bark has not been removed and crushed parts of the bark removed between two or more compression steps. The wood may subsequently be sawn into lengths suitable for the manufacture of pulp. Alternatively, the wood may be subjected to a further crushing treatment or to treatment in edge mills or disc refiners to yield a mechanical pulp or the wood may be subjected to treatment by chemicals to produce a chemical pulp.

[Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] A composite floorboard comprises two or more relatively staggered rows of small boards 9 connected edge to edge by dovetails and glue, the boards comprising each row being connected end to end by tongues and grooves. The composite board is tongued and grooved along its longitudinal edges. In the manufacture of the board, boards 9 provided at their ends with tongues and grooves are placed in superimposed relation in magazines at the opposite ends of a machine, such as a " Linderman " machine. The boards are withdrawn singly by drivers 7 on chains 3 running towards the centre of the machine ; the drivers are automatically retracted, and the boards are arrested by spring-loaded pressure rollers 4 whereby the tongues and grooves are caused to engage ; the rows then travel past cutters which provide dovetails on the edges, glue is applied and the rows strung together by the chains. A further row may be added to the board in similar fashion. In a modification, the boards are assembled end to end to form a row before being placed in the magazines ; the boards may be placed singly by hand on the chains.
