This makes available high density, high melting point, thermally stable small and medium ring nitrogen heterocycles that may also contain N-nitro, C-nitro or other functional groups. The compounds include cyclooctanes, bicyclo octanes, propellanes and functionalized derivatives of the above compounds. The preparations can include transannular cyclizations. The materials have several applications; e.g., the polynitro compounds are energetic materials.

The synthetic methods of the present invention allow the nitrogen based functional groups to be attached selectively to one of two distinct regions of the carbon nanotube, the ends or the sidewall, and thus enable the synthesis of a carbon nanotube having nitrogen based functional groups substantially concentrated on either the ends or the sidewall of the carbon nanotube.
