    • In order to prepare antimicrobial substances, compounds having the formulas (I): R -NR -CH2-CH2-CH2-NH and (II) or (III): R -CH2-COOH are dissolved in each other in a molar ratio from about 1 : 1 to 1 : 2 by adding portions of (II) to (I) while agitating them at temperatures from about 80 to 100 DEG C. In the formula (I), R stands for a linear alkyl residue with 6 to 22 carbon atoms, preferably with 12 to 14 carbon atoms, and R stands for H or for CH2-CH2-CH2-NH2, and in the formulas (II) or (III), R stands for an alkyl residue with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or preferably a hydrogen atom; 10 to 100 l/minute nitrogen are then continuously blown over the reaction water that results at the beginning of the reaction, at temperatures from about 120 to 150 DEG C, until one hour from the end of the reaction has elapsed. The thus obtained reaction products may be reacted with inorganic and organic acids into corresponding salts and with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide into the corresponding alkoxylation products. The alkoxylation products may in turn be converted into the corresponding salts of inorganic or organic acids. Said salts, alkoxylation products and salts of the alkoxylation products also have an antimicrobial activity.
