    • 576,388. Making leaf springs. TOLEDO WOODHEAD SPRINGS, Ltd., and WOODHEAD, F. April 29, 1944, No. 8096. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Altering structure by mechanical treatment.- In a method of treating leaves for leaf springs to increase their fatigue resistance and effective life, the edges of a leaf are chamfered as at d or g so as to produce obtuse angles between the tension surface a and the edges c, and the tension surface and chamfered portions are subsequently work-hardened by shot-blasting &c. The chamfering, which may be performed by grinding, milling, filing, planing, &c., is preferably effected after the leaf has been hardened and tempered and may extend throughout the length of the leaf or only on the more highly stressed portions. The chamfered surfaces extend at least to the neutral axis of the leaf and may assume other shapes than those shown, and the compression surface may be grooved longitudinally. The edges adjacent the compression surface b may also be chamfered. Specification 542,043 is referred to, and the Provisional Specification refers also to Specifications 467,407 and 532,698, [both in Group XXXII].

    • 807,422. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions. WOODHEAD, F. Nov. 30, 1956 [Jan. 5, 1956; Feb. 21, 1956; Aug. 11, 1956; Sept. 25, 1956], Nos. 431/56, 5272/56, 24634/56 and 29226/56. Class 108(2) A vehicle spring-suspension comprising a toggle linkage D 1 D 2 connected between the vehicle and the main spring B adjacent the axle A, the pivot D of the toggle being connected to a tension spring E, the other end e of which is connected to a bracket rigid with the vehicle. The arrangement is such, that under normal load, the link D 2 and the spring E are in alignment. In a modification (Fig. 3b, not shown), the end e of the spring E may be connected to a downward extension of the main spring shackle. In a further modification (Fig. 3a, not shown), this connection is made to the shackle adjacent the eye of the spring B. According to the eye of the spring B. According to the second Provisional Specification the spring E may be in the form of a torsion bar which may be pre-loaded by means of a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. Specifications 734,886, 771,447 and 790,239 are referred to in Provisional Specification.
