In a ships' lifeboat having grouped in a part only of the boat and towards one end thereof transverse rows or sets of hand levers 20 for driving a screw propeller, there are three or more levers in at least one of the transverse rows or sets. The levers are pivotally supported at 21 and through a coupling rod 22 and a connecting rod 23 drive a crankshaft 24 which, through suitable gearing, drives the propeller shaft 25. The boat has means for providing an open space S for recumbent passengers similar to that described in Specification 723,645. Specifications 517,147, 559,088, 560,016 and 566,925 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.

[Class 113 (ii)] The interior of a lifeboat or like boat is unobstructed by thwarts or like transverse members extending from side to side of the boat, and is provided with seating accommodation for occupants facing along the length of the boat. This seating accommodation may comprise a common longitudinal seat or a row of longitudinally spaced seats. In the form shown, spaced table-like seats 24 are supported by standards 25 above a well deck 20 and level with side benches 11. The boat may be strengthened transversely by spaced fabricated arches which support a canopy, the side tank cleading 13 may be used to extend the benches 11 to the seats 24 to provide an upper deck, and during lowering of the boat, temporary thwarts may be fitted. Food and water tanks 26, 27 may be located beneath the seats 24. The metal hull may comprise a keel 32 and substantially flat, vertical, sheer, bilge and bottom strakes 33, 34 and 36 respectively.

[Class 89 (ii)] Hooks for lifting tackle, particularly applicable for launching gear for ships' lifeboats, are moused by a lever 10 pivoted on brackets 15 and having a forked arm 13 embracing the hook and extending at an angle to the arm 12 having a hole 20 coaxial with a hole 21 in the plank &c. 16 supporting the hook and brackets. A long pin 19 engages the holes and locks the mousing lever in position but is connected by a rope 23 with the davit head and the rope is of such length that the pin is withdrawn, just prior to the boat becoming water borne, allowing the arm 13 to fall clear of the hook to permit disengagement of the fall rope 18.

[Class 113 (ii)] A barge primarily designed for the conveyance of tanks is formed with bows shaped like that of a punt to facilitate the landing of the tanks after the barge has been driven on a shelving beach. The tanks are mounted to run on tracks 22 which are inclined towards the forward end of the barge. The bow portion 10 may be hinged to form a continuation of the track. The craft is driven by combined motor and hand gear such as is described in Specification 489,624, this gear being mounted at either side of the track below its general level. The sides of the craft may be provided with removable armour.

[Class 114] In boat-propulsion gear wherein the propeller shaft is actuated by manual gear, a casing is provided to carry the bearings for the final bevel pinion drive and the forward and reverse pawl gear thereof, and it is further provided with a removable cover plate opposite the propeller shaft for the attachment of a power drive. A propeller shaft 23 is coupled by a universal joint with a bevel wheel 31 which meshes with the bevel wheel 24 freely mounted upon a transverse shaft 18, the bearing for the shaft and the bevel wheel being carried by a casing 21. The shaft 18 is adapted to be operated by cranks 16 from a number of fore and aft rods which are oscillated by hand levers and when manual propulsion is desired the lever 28 puts the clutch 26, which is keyed on the shaft 18, into engagement with the bevel wheel 24. Upon the shaft is a pawl wheel 34 with which engages ratchets 35 or 36 according to the direction of rotation required. In the hub 25 of the wheel 24 there is a one-way ratchet 27 which functions when the hand-propulsion gear is used for starting up the power machine. On the end cover 38 being removed, a gear-box 41 may be attached and the drive therefrom connected by the bevel wheel 39 with the crown wheel 24. The various control rods 42, 43 of the power plant are led through passages in the casing to the after control cockpit of the boat. Specification 489,624 is referred to.

[Class 113 (ii)] A straight apron 17 with the grain running lengthwise and bolted to the straight stem 15 is connected at its lower end to a straight-chock 19 with the grain likewise running lengthwise. The aft end of the chock 19 is coupled between the keelson 11 and the hog piece 14 which is located between the keel 10 and the keelson 11. The metal bracket 21 secured in the angle between the apron 17 and the chock 19 serves as an anchorage for the lifting tackle 22. In a modification, the keelson extends from the bow to the stern apron and chocks under the ends of the keelson provide faying surfaces. The construction is designed to obviate the employment of grown frames at the bow and stern of the boat.

[Class 115] Gear for launching a life-saving raft, lifeboat, cargo, or the like from the deck of a ship comprises a parbuckle device extending from the deck D and around the raft 11 to control the movement of the raft down a slipway 10 and to form a cradle for the raft as it moves over the edge of the deck, and a lowering tackle which supports the raft after it has left the slipway. The latter comprises two or more articulated triangular frames which can be raised by a tackle on the davits E from a horizontal stowage position on the deck to an inclined launching position, the outer frames having eyes 30 for releasable engagement by pivoted hooks 29 on the ends of the raft. The lowering tackle comprises slings 12 and falls 13 attached to triangular sling plates 14 on the heads of the davits, the plates 14 also carrying falls 18 for the usual lifeboat 19. The parbuckle device comprises a block and tackle 21 connected at one end 22 to the deck D and at the other end to a sliplink 23 connected to a pair of spaced-apart ropes 24. These are attached by hooks 25 to eyes 26 on the inboard lower edge of the raft, and pass through eyes 27 on the edge of the deck which prevent the passage of abutments 28 on the ropes and so automatically release the ropes from the raft when the latter moves off the slipway and attach them to the deck.

In the example shown the corners of the square shaped well 14 bisect the sides 16 of the raft the spaces between the corner of the raft and the sides of the well being filled with buoyant material. The well is provided with a floor 20. In a modification the sides of the raft are provided with triangular extensions.

[Class 113 (ii)] A ship's lifeboat has sheer strakes which are vertical throughout their length and are straight ' for at least half their length amidships. It also has a " cruiser stern, the upward curve of the stern commencing at about one fifth of the length forward from the stern. The boat has an internal plate keel 64 with angle bars 65 and an internal chafing plate 66. The thwarts 26 are connected to the transverse bulkheads 27 which are also connected to the longitudinal bulkheads 30. The sheer strake 22 is supported by angle brackets 31 and a gunwale bar 36. At the stern the keel 41 protrudes externally and carries a key 42 and the shaft tube 45. The stern plating is secured by the heel fitting 43 and plates 47. In a modification a bar stern post is provided. Specification 332,084, [CLass 113 (ii)7, is referred to.
