摘要： 117,370. Nalder, F. H., and Nalder Bros. & Thompson. Oct. 24, 1917. Centrifugal speed indicators, of the kind having weighted arms C adapted to pivot on a transverse spindle B carried by the revolving shaft A against the influence of a flat spiral spring D, are provided with means for varying the tension of the spring. One end of the spring is secured to a pin D' carried bv an arm C and the other to the spindle B which is formed with a coned surface B adapted to engage with a similar surface formed in a boss A on the shaft A. Lateral movement of the spindle B is produced by a nut G which presses a milled head E, carried on a squared part B , against a sleeve F abutting against the boss A , In operation, the nut is loosened and the spring tension adjusted by the milled head which is held in the desired position until the whole is again locked by the nut. In a modification, the spindle B may be fixed, and the coned locking-surfaces formed on it and on the sleeve mounted thereon, one end of the spring being secured to this surrounding sleeve.

Electromagnetic current meters.-A cockpiece for supporting the spindles of ammeters or other instruments comprises a part 16 provided with integral arms 14 at rightangles to the instrument spindle, the lower end of the cock-piece being provided with a concentric projection 19 engaging in a recess 20 and carrying a jewel bearing 18, the upper end being secured by distance pieces 12,.the arms 14 and a plate 9 which carries the upper jewel bearing 17. The instrument shown is of the moving iron type, the fixed iron 6 being secured to the cock-piece which, together with the moving system, are located in a tubular ebonite member 3 of quadrant-shape cross-section around which the energizing coil 2 is mounted.

Retarding and time-limit devices.-In a relay, the inverse time delay action or time lag is adjusted by alteration of the inertia of the rotary moving member of the relay itself, and this alteration is effected by the addition of one or more inertia discs or rings to the spindle of the moving member. The discs may be slotted and placed in a light cup. The relay spindle A carries a very light cup B to which is secured a pin E and in which may be placed one or more than slotted discs F, the slotted part G engaging the spindle A and pin E. The cup B is cut a.way at H to facilitate removal of the discs and carries a contact B , while, the discs are bored at F to compensate for the slot G and produce symmetry of loading on the spindle. The cup is of negligible inertia and the desired amount of inertia may be added by placing the required number of discs in the cup.

Current and energy m e t e rs. - A subsidiary pointer c for setting to any particular scale reading is provided with adjusting - means, protected from tampering by a seal or lock or both. In the arrangement shown, the pointer c is fixed to a boss c which passes through the bottom of a recess in the lid b of the instrument, and may be turned by a key which engages with holes in a flange on the boss. The recess contains a seal and is closed by a screw cap b . A fixed pin prevents the seal from turning in the recess. In a modification, a circular lock is hinged in the recess so that it covers the flange, and is secured by a latch which can be drawn back by a key. The face of the lock may be sealed, the keyhole being covered by a flap to prevent its being choked up. In another arrangement the pointer is pivoted on a stud which screws into the bottom of the recess, and an adjusting-pin fixed to the pointer passes through a slot into the recess, where it is covered by the seal. The slot is covered by a circular plate to keep out dust. The subsidiary and main pointers need not be co-axial.

Thermometers. - In thermometers of the Wheatstonebridge type, variation of the source f of electromotive force is allowed for by using a moving- coil galvanometer with a controlling- coil e connected directly to the battery &c. f on the same spindle as, and at right-angles to the moving coil e . The bridge is in balance for the most important temperature to be measured, and the galvanometer is calibrated in terms of the temperature. To get increased sensitiveness, two opposite arms of the bridge may be exposed to the source of heat. Fig. 4 illustrates a means of testing successively the temperatures at a number of distant points, by putting coils at these points into a bridge as the fourth arm. As shown, the coils S', S , S , R', &c. at the distant points are arranged in groups of three. The switches h, i are geared up and work together, the handle i making one complete revolution while the handle h makes one step. In this way one group is selected, the components of the group are put in circuit successively, and then the next group is brought in. Specification No. 6890, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Electricity, Regulating &c.], is referred to.

The cylinder is grooved and hardened, and the grooves c then filled with metal segments c , preferably deeper than the grooves and secured by rings c of insulating-material cemented or fastened to the cylinder and end discs c . To prevent chattering, the spring-pressed carbon &c. brushes are made wide and curved to fit the metal segments, and the grooves may bs helical, as shown in Fig. 4. The metal segments c have arms c for connection to the armature coils.

Resistance meters; testing.-In an electric measuring-instrument having a hand operated dynamo to be driven at a predetermined speed, the attainment of this speed is indicated by a vibratory reed mounted on the apparatus and tuned to he set in vibration at the required speed. Two other reeds may be provided, to vibrate at slightly higher and lower speeds than the normal respectively, or a series of such reeds may be used to al!ow tests to be made at different voltages and to provide for the alteration in strength of the permanent magnets with use. The device may be applied to an ohmmeter, to avoid error due to the capacity or self-induction of the resistant circuit. Fig. 6 shows a set of three reeds b, b , b mounted on supports b , secured to the dial of an instrument by a nut or otherwise. The central reed b vibrates when the dynamo speed is normal, the others indicating slightly higher or lower speeds. Thd reeds preferably are of elastic metal, such as phosphor - bronze, and may be mounted on any other part of the apparatus which vibrates when the dynamo is driven, e.g. the case or bed-plate.

Cut-outs; switches.-An automatic connecting and disconnecting switch for use in charging a battery from a dynamo consists of mercury cups g, g , Fig. 2, a contact fork e attached to a pivoted beam d , a soft-iron bar d forming part of the beam and and passing through a hollow bobbin wound with a high-resistance coil c and a low-resistance coil c', and a permanent magnet i placed outside the bobbin so as to present its poles to the end of the soft-iron bar. The. high-resistance coil remains permanently in the circuit, and, when the current in it is of the right direction and sufficient strength, causes the fork to enter the mercury cups and complete the low-resistance circuit for charging. If the current reverses or falls lower than a set limit, the forks are automatically removed. Figs. 6 and 7 show modified forms differing only in the position of the pivot d' and the permanent magnet i. The magnet may be placed so as to complete the circuit either by attraction or repulsion.

The shield has the form of a cubical box surrounding the coil, its ends being open. It may be in two parts, as shown, one overlapping the other tightly. Or it may be in one piece, the ends of which are overlapped.
