Fig. 3 shows the machine in plan view, and Fig. 4 a partial transverse section. The eggs are placed on an endless feedbelt 1, which transfers them to a pair of diverging bands or belts g passing over pulleys f at opposite ends of the machine. The bands g are preferably of india-rubber, and of circular cross-section. Sagging is prevented and the divergence maintained by means of longitudinal supports u, Fig. 4. The distance apart of the pulleys f is adjustable by varying the thickness of the washers which separate them. As the eggs drop through between the bands they are received by a wide transverse belt 10, which transfers them to a shelf 17. Partitions 16 prevent mixing of the various grades. The belt 10 is preferably secured at each side to sprocket chains 10 . To cause the eggs to lie lengthwise between the bands g, two flexible or elastic straightening-devices 21 are provided, which may consist of curved metal strips. An egg lying crosswise will be turned by contact with these devices. The machine may be driven by an electromotor or by belt gearing &c.

Lift cages and doors, locking and unlocking.- Comprises an automatic locking and unlocking device for lift gates or doors which may he combined with a main-circuit switch and a cnshioning-device for the door. A bolt c attached to the gate engages a lever l when the gate is closed, a spring s forcing the roller r into engagement with a notch / in the bolt. The spring s is not sufficiently strong to prevent the door from being opened by hand, but prevents the gate from rebounding on being slammed to. A spring-pressed sliding bolt a adapted to engage a lug h on the lever l and to lock the lever when the cage is away from the floor is released by a cam on the cage upon arrival of the latter. To provide against the possibility of the roller r failing to engage the notch f, a second notch is provided. A switch member p on the gate engages spring contacts t , t , and a spring buffer may be fitted to reduce shock on the closing of the gate.

Lift doors, locking and unlocking.-The latch of the fastening for lift gates, as described in the parent Specification, is mechanically connected through a link x with the contact t'. By this arrangement, until the latch is in locking engagement with the catch c on the closed gate d, the contact t' does not engage with the contacts t , p, and the flow of current through the controlling-circuit is interrupted. The fastening-members are locked in the engaged position by a cam on the spindle a, which extends in the path of the extension h of the latch. When the lift reaches a doorway, a projection on the lift cage engages a cam n and rotates the spindle a, so that the gate can then be opened.
