    • The invention relates to the field of sorting machines. The present invention relates to a sorter (1) for sorting articles such as CDs, videos, books, letters and/or flats and even mail parcels and other types of articles. In order e.g. to provide an improved relation between sorting capacity, sorting level and/or floor space the invention discloses in one aspect a conveyor system for conveying articles, comprising an endless track assembly (10a, 10b), a plurality of cartridges (15) for receiving articles and for discharging received articles therefrom, where the cartridges is supported from the track assembly and movable about a conveying path defined by the track assembly, and the conveyor system furthermore comprises a plurality of destination buffers (13, 14, 15, 16) for receiving articles being discharged from the cartridges (5), wherein the destination buffers (14) is positioned at a level below the cartridges and being movable transverse to said conveying path between two or more discharge positions.

    • A tilting mechanism comprising an article-supporting member, such as a tray or a conveyor belt for a sorter for transporting and sorting various articles is disclosed. The article-supporting member may be held tilted about two parallel axes each being fixed with respect to the tilting part or the stationary part and being movable along a predetermined path with respect to the other part. Further is disclosed a sorter comprising article-supporting members arranged on tilting mechanisms to tilt the members when passing curves and during induction of articles from the side of the sorter so as to prevent articles form sliding off the members and thus enable the sorter to operate at much higher conveying speeds than known sorters.

    • The present invention relates to a sorting system including a conveyor comprising a plurality of carts for carrying articles, in particular for sorting articles such as parcels and baggage. The conveyor has a linear synchronous motor drive system with stators arranged along a track which the carts follow. Reaction elements are mounted on each of the carts. The reaction elements each comprise an even or an uneven number of permanent magnets arranged on a plate-like carrier. The magnets on reaction elements of adjacent carts are arranged to form arrow of magnets with alternating polarity, said row having two neighbouring magnets. At least one of the two neighbouring magnets has a reduced dimension in the transport direction, and the two neighbouring magnets are situated at a transition between adjacent carts.

The magnets on reaction elements of adjacent carts are arranged to form arrow of magnets with constant pitch and alternating polarity, said row having an interruption situated at a transition between adjacent carts. A maximum number of coils in the stator may thereby be active at the same time, when driving the conveyor.

    • The invention relates to automated handling of baggage objects (1) of variable sizes, shapes and consistencies, including baggage in an airport. The invention involves measuring at least length in two directions of the objects while supported on conveyor means (8), turning selected objects in an angle according to a selection in response to the measured lengths in relation to a predetermined value, and transferring objects to a storage device (6) to collect a plurality of objects, and preferably while said objects are supported on conveyor means (5). The selection in response to at least one predetermined value provides one basis for deciding whether to turn the objects before the objects are transferred to the storage device. This facilitates automatic transfer of baggage objects without manual intervention.
