    • A small, permanent magnet rotor, synchronous electric motor, suitable for use in, for example, a home appliance such as a refrigerator/freezer to drive a fan blade. The rotor of the motor is provided with two, axially displaced magnetic pole pairs, each positioned within an air gap in a single magnetic circuit. A clutch is also provided so that, for example, a fan blade may be mounted on the rotor and the motor may be started reliably, in the correct direction and accelerate relatively slowly to synchronous speed. Further embodiments of the motor include stators having two and three magnetic pole pairs. The method of construction of the stator magnetic circuit ensures efficient usage of stator material.

    • A rotating drum clothes drier (1) has an annular lint filter (28, 30) which rotates with the drier drum (4) and which encircles the drier door (18). Heated air enters an inlet (8) at one end of the drum (4), passes through the clothes in the drum (4) (picking up lint from the clothes), through the annular lint filter (28, 30) and out of the drier (1). During operation, lint collects on the inner surface of the rotating filter (28, 30), eventually building up to form a felted layer. A scraper blade (42) fixed to the drier cabinet (2) and aligned with (but displaced a fixed distance from) the surface of the filter (28, 30) peels the felted layer of lint from the filter (28, 30) once the thickness of the felt is such that the scraper blade (42) contacts the lint felt. The layer of lint felt thus removed from the filter surface (30) is then collected in a cavity (19) within the drier door (18) for storage and later disposal.

    • An evaporator for a cooling device such as a refrigerator/freezer wherein the outer surface (6) of the evaporator has spirally wound thereon a spiked or looped fin heat conductive ribbon material (2). The spikes or fins effectively increasing the surface area of the evaporator surface in order to more efficiently and effectively cool the cooling device. A heating wire (3) is also spirally wound onto the evaporator tube at or near the region of contact of the spikes or fins. The heater wire (3) having an electrically insulating coating (4) so that, upon energisation of the heating wire (3), the spikes or fins and the area on the evaporator tube adjacent to the heater wire (3) are warmed and defrosted.     • A forced air clothes drier which removes water vapour from the air exhausted from the chamber (1). The vapour containing air (A) is passed through one or two compressors (4, 7), a heat exchanger (12) and an expansion means (8) as the working fluid in a heat pump/refrigeration cycle. The condensed water vapour is drawn off at the expansion means. The cycle is preferably closed and the dry air (G) leaving the expansion means is returned to the drying chamber. The expansion means may be a turbine (8) mechanically coupled to one of the compressors (7) to improve the efficiency of the drier.
