    • This system (200), apparatus (300), and method (100) of the present invention provide an analytic way to solve the (input) estimation problem of pharmacokinetic modeling: estimating parameters of a kinetic model from a series of tracer (radioactively labeled imaging agent) activity measurements (e.g. by positron emission tomography). Since the model describes a biological process its parameters have a direct functional interpretation (e.g. hypoxia for the tracer FMISO) that can be of diagnostic value. The measurements represent the activity distribution in time and space in the form of a 4D data set d(t, x, y, z), t = 1, . . . , T. The kinetic parameter estimation procedure (205) requires knowledge of the tracer input activity. This input activity can either be measured invasively or it can be estimated from the data in a preprocessing step. The estimation problem can be solved efficiently if the model and its input are described analytically. Typically parameterized functions (often sums of exponential terms) (204) are fitted to the averaged data over a region of interest (ROI) (e.g. an artery or the left ventricular blood pool) in order to obtain an analytical input representation. The input function representation (functional form) (204) and its initial parameter values (205) have to be selected / specified prior to the fitting procedure 206). The present invention thereby reduces the amount of manual interaction and operator dependence in the evaluation of dynamic procedures.

    • The invention relates to a method and a device for uphill casting/low-pressure casting especially of light metal alloys said device comprising a casting furnace lying below a casting plate and comprising an ascending pipe, said pipe comprising an orifice; and a casting mould having a pouring gate lying underneath and a sliding closure which forms a through channel having an essentially straight longitudinal course for casting. In order to close the through channel, the sliding closure comprises two immediately adjacent opening segments pertaining to the through channel which are displaced towards each other transversally in relation to the longitudinal course of the through channel, immediately after the casting when the molten metal is still in a liquid state in the pouring gate, in such a way that one upper opening segment remains openly connected, without a back draft, to the pouring gate, and a lower opening segment remains openly connected to the orifice of the ascending pipe. Said opening segments are completely offset in relation to each other. The level of molten metal in the ascending pipe is then lowered below the orifice of the ascending pipe and the lower opening segment of the through channel is thereby emptied of the molten metal.

    • A mould for horizontal casting of molten metal comprising a mould body forming an open-ended mould cavity having an inlet end and an outlet end. An annular permeable wall member is mounted in the mould body adjacent the inlet end of the mould cavity with an inner face thereof forming an interior face of the mould. A refractory transition plate is mounted at the inlet end of the mould cavity, this transition plate providing a mould inlet opening having a cross-section less than that of the mould cavity. This provides an annular shoulder at the inlet end of the cavity. Means are provided for feeding molten aluminum through the inlet opening. Separate conduits are also provided for feeding a gas into the shoulder and via the permeable wall means for providing a layer of gas between the metal and the inner face of the mould. A gas that is more reactive with molten aluminum is fed into the shoulder and a less reactive gas is fed via the permeable wall. The reactions with the molten aluminum create a skin or shell on the aluminum which provides smooth passage through the mould and allows for more rapid secondary cooling of the emerging ingot.
