    • A needle for use as part of a fastener dispensing tool adapted for dispensing plastic fasteners of the type typically used to attach tags to products for marking and identification. In one embodiment, the needle is made from a single sheet of metal by a stamping and/or rolling technique, and comprises an elongated, generally cylindrical, hollow, slotted member having a stem portion and a base portion. The stem portion terminates at its front end in a relatively sharp tip. The base portion, which is sized and shaped for insertion in an opening in the nose of the tool, includes a pair of outwardly extending, spring biased tabs. A first portion of one of the tabs is sized and shaped to releasably engage a recessed area formed in one of the walls of the opening so as to prevent unintended removal of the base portion from the opening and to limit rearward insertion of the base portion into the opening. This first portion also extends partially out of the opening so as to permit a user to grasp it and to push it inwardly out of engagement with the recessed area. A second portion of the same tab is sized and shaped to engage another wall of the opening so as to prevent upward movement of the base portion in the opening. The other tab serves as a registration member to align the base portion in its desired longitudinally, vertical and axial orientations.

    • A continuous paper web-moving mechanism has a supply roll on which the paper is wound and pulled from the supply roll by a drive roll that engages the paper on its surface by a pressure exerted against the paper at that point. In this preferred embodiment the pressure is exerted by a thermal printhead resiliently mounted to force the paper against the drive roll. A leaf spring is mounted at one end of the drive roll, bearing against the edge of the wound paper, providing a friction drag on the drive roll. Also, the drive roll is kept in a fixed lateral position by the force of the leaf spring, aiding in aligning the paper. The tension between the supply roll and the drive roll is such that the paper is stiffened, providing a contact with the surface of the drive roller in a tangential line.

    • An electronic digital programmable wall thermostat system for controlling heating and cooling systems supplying an indoor area or space. The thermostat includes a digital clock, a display for displaying desired parameters of time and temperature and a data entry keyboard for programming the thermostat to maintain desired temperatures during selected time intervals. The heart of the system is a digital processor with memory, which responds to signals from a temperature sensing means which includes an analog to digital converter for controlling the heating and cooling systems in accordance with the sequence programmed therein. The system provides for conservation of energy by automatic system shutdown or setback when the heated or cooled space is unoccupied or during periods when activity in the space is minimal such as during sleeping hours. In a preferred embodiment, a single chip digital processor is used to control the operation of the thermostat system, the keyboard, display and temperature sensing means being selectively scanned from output terminals of the digital processor.
