    • 1,009,161. Producing sound and ultrasonic vibrations. G. R. POHLMAN and E. G. LIERKE. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 22, 1962; June 8, 1963], No. 33091/63. Heading G5J. [Also in Division H2] Longitudinal and/or torsional vibrations of sonic or ultrasonic frequency are induced in a bar 6 (Fig. 1) or 16 (Fig. 3) by the alternate attractive and repulsive forces and by the torque between a disc 5 (Fig. 1), or 11 (Fig. 3), comprising a plurality of segments magnetized axially and with adjacent segments of opposite polarity (see Figs 2 and 2a) or magnetized tangentially (see Figs. 4 and 5) secured to the bars which are supported at vibrational nodes 7 or 16 and a similar disc 2 (Fig. 1) or 11 1 (Fig. 3) secured to shafts 4 or 18 which are driven at a speed such that the frequency of alternation of the attractive and repulsive forces between the discs is equal to the frequency of the natural longitudinal vibration of the system formed by the bar 6 or 16 together with the disc 5 or 11 respectively. To increase the magnitude of the vibrations the driving shaft and the vibrated shaft may each be provided with a pair of magnetic discs 11 1 , 11a 1 and 11, 11a respectively, (Fig. 6). In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 and 2a, the discs may be constructed from individual segments of sintered magnetized material separated by spacers 8a, 8b etc. of diamagnetic material or, a single piece of such material magnetized in the required manner may be employed. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the discs are constructed from segments of ceramic material 12 magnetized tangentially and inserted in incisions in a " plate " formed by winding a plurality of layers, e.g. 13a, 13b, 13c etc. of a material of high magnetic saturation. The assemblies are secured by adhesion to discs 14, 14 1 of non- magnetic material and enclosed by a band of similar material. For ease of starting the two discs are separated by a considerable distance which is reduced when the desired rotational speed has been reached preferably under the control of automatic means such as a centrifugal governor or by electronic means. To avoid overheating due to eddy current losses air-cooling of the assemblies may be effected by providing blades in the axial space between the discs or the latter may be provided with obliquely directed bores or slots. Applications of the invention referred to are: the production of vibrations in liquids; the atomization of liquids; drilling; welding (steel and plastics); emulsifying and dispersing, the end of the bars 6 or 15 being suitably shaped themselves or provided with suitable tool attachments. For the atomization of liquids the latter is supplied via a hole situated at the vibration node (7 or 16) of the rod and emerges via an axial bore ending in fine outlet bores in the end face of the rod which in this case is tapered or stepped down to a smaller diameter to provide a " speedtransformer " effect.
