    • A multicarrier communication device using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols can vary the number of subcarriers being used on multicarrier communication within a network, based on a predetermined criterion and capability information. The capability information can include a data file, which indicates portions of an electromagnetic spectrum for which regulatory body licenses are currently obtained for a network cell. Alternatively, the capability information can include capability information about the wireless devices in communication with the multicarrier communication device, where the capability information for each wireless device includes device power limitations, device bandwidth width limitations, or which subcarriers a wireless device is capable of using.

    • A base station is arranged for performing channel coding and link adaptation. The base station comprises one or more processors and physical layer circuitry arranged to decode symbols received from a user station to determine an error rate, the symbols received through a plurality of antennas, receive signaling from the user station, the signaling including channel quality information for channel resources of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) channel, select a modulation and coding rate for transmission of symbols to the user station based at least in part on the error rate, and transmit a transmit power control command to the user station, the transmit power control command based at least in part on a downlink path loss estimate. The base station may also transmit additional transmit power control commands to the user station based on the error rate of subsequently decoded symbols. The transmit power control command may be selected for channel resources that are allocated to the user station, the channel resources comprising a group of subcarriers having an initially selected modulation and coding rate.

    • A method, apparatus and system relate to detecting an interfering device in a wireless network such as a wireless local area network (WLAN). In wireless networks using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and adaptive bit loading (ABL), adaptive modulation information should be somewhat symmetric in uplink and downlink directions. By comparing modulation adaptations in the uplink and downlink directions of a communication channel between at least two terminals, identified differences can indicate the presence of a potential interferer in the wireless network. A location of the potential interferer can be estimated if a location of one or more network terminals experiencing interference is known or can be determined. An exemplary implementation for a device of the invention may be as an Access Point (AP) in the WLAN.

    • A wireless transmitter system for use in maintaining a wireless link with a remote transceiver includes a beamforming transmit antenna structure and a power control unit for controlling transmit power levels. The system determines the direction of the remote transceiver and then generates a transmit antenna beam in that direction. The power control unit then determines the antenna gain of the generated beam and uses the antenna gain information to adjust the transmit power level of the system so that it does not exceed government mandated limits. In one embodiment, the average transmit duty cycle of the system is also used to adjust transmit power. The system is capable of achieving a maximum transmit power without exceeding applicable power limits.
