    • An apparatus and method for storing image data comprising a first storage device and a second storage device. The first storage device may be configured to store at least one first pixel from a first field of a frame of the image at a first physical address in the first storage device. The second storage device may be configured to store a second pixel from a second field of the frame of the image at a second physical address in the second storage device. The first and second physical addresses may have the same relative position in an address space of the respective storage devices.

    • A method is provided for transcoding, i.e., decoding, and re-encoding, a previously encoded video signal, to a second encoded representation. A number k>1 of previously encoded pictures of the previously encoded video signal are received in a buffer. Each of the k previously encoded pictures in the buffer is scanned to gather information on each of the k previously encoded pictures. An encoding parameter is allocated to a first one of the k previously encoded pictures which precedes each other one of the k previously encoded pictures in encoded order of the previously encoded video signal. The encoding parameter is allocated based on the information gathered for each of the k previously encoded pictures. The first previously encoded picture is decoded to produce a decoded picture. The decoded picture is re-encoded to generate a re-encoded picture in a second encoded representation of the video signal. The re-encoding is performed in a fashion which depends on the encoding parameter allocated thereto. An apparatus is also disclosed for carrying out the method including a buffer, a scanner (for performing the scanning and allocating steps), a decoder and an encoder.

    • A method and system are provided for capturing and compressing an original uncompressed video signal which enables decoding and reversible reconstruction of a decompressed version of the original video signal. The system includes an input for receiving a signal indicating a special effect operation by which a first frame of a video signal is irreversibly transformed to a special effect frame. This is achieved by combining decompressed frame pixel data of the first frame with information comprising either pixel data of a second frame or a single scaling value to be used to scale plural pixels of a frame. The information indicates a special effect operation which can be performed on decompressed pixel data of the first frame to produce a special effect frame (e.g., the information can include a separate indicator specifying a specific operation or the information by its mere presence can indicate the special effect operation). The system also includes a processor for compressing pixel data of the first frame. The processor is also for constructing a bitstream containing the compressed pixel data of the first frame and the information. The bitstream is decompressible in a first manner to reproduce a decompressed video signal including the special effect frame, produced by performing the indicated special effect operation, in place of the first frame. The bitstream is also decompressible in a second manner to produce a decompressed version of the video signal with the first frame and without the special effect frame. The system and method according to this embodiment form a novel bitstream containing the compressed video frames and the information which can be stored on a storage medium. A system is also provided with a demultiplexer, decompressor and special effects generator for presenting the video signal with or without the special effect.

    • A method for processing a video bitstream is disclosed. The method generally includes the steps of (A) determining co-located motion information for a plurality of co-located sub-blocks in a co-located macroblock of the video bitstream, (B) storing the co-located motion information for (i) at least a first three of the co-located sub-blocks along a left side of the co-located macroblock, (ii) at least a second three of the co-located sub-blocks along a right side of the co-located macroblock and (iii) less than all of the co-located sub-blocks and (C) inferring current motion information for a current macroblock co-located in a different picture from the co-located macroblock using the co-located motion information that was stored.
