    • 150,443. Lavington, B., and Jacob, E. June 6, 1919. Reels, rod.-A reel is designed for long-distance casting, for automatically picking up the line for rewinding and crossing on the spool, and for winding in either direction without varying the direction of movement of the crank handle. A reel attachment plate A carries a turntable B on which is pivoted a bracket C attached to a reel casing D, whereby this is adapted for use either parallel to a rod E for casting or transversely thereto for winding. The reel casing D has a spindle J having a crank handle K and a spring latch L, which permits a spool M to be detachably mounted so as to be longitudinally reversible on the spindle J. The spool M is fitted on a slidable spindle N having a pinion O and a pinion P with a boss Q. Gear-wheels T, U, V, rotate a pair of wheels R, S at different levels in opposite directions, the lower wheel R engaging the pinion 0 and the upper wheel S engaging alternatively the pinion P. On guide-rods W is mounted a sliding cross-head X, having inclines Y and slots Z for picking up the line and a wire guard 1, which is longitudinally reciprocated over the spool M by means of a connecting-rod 2 and crank 3, connected by bevel-gears 4, 5 and spur gears 6, 7 to the spindle J for crossing the line during winding. The invention can be arranged also for a fishing-reel having a fixed central spindle.

    • 16,184. Antoni, E. J. Aug. 9. Upholstery stuffing-apparatus. -In a machine for filling and compressing mattresses, power is transmitted through shafts B to ropes x raising upper carriages W from the receptacle F, the carriages being then moved to the rear of the machine on bars w . The required amount of material is placed in the receptacle F on plates M, M', and the carriages W are moved forward and lowered, the plates P, P , which are carried thereon, resting on the stock. The sides of the receptacle F are moved together slightly by cranks h, the gate f being adjustable for that purpose. The material is then compressed by power applied through a shaft y and bevel-gear y , the material being compressed equally at each end by means of racks y communicating by gear v . The outer end of the space between the plates is closed by an adjustable head-block T. The end gate f is removed, and the tick or cover attached to clamps L on racks I, and the operation of a clutch causes power to be communicated to the racks, moving them to the rear of the machine, thus drawing the tick over the plates P, P', M, M'. At the end of the travel, the clutch is automatically disengaged and the motion stopped. The racks y are then raised, and power is communicated through shafts N, P to the carriages W, D, moving them rearwardly on suitable rails, along with the sides of the receptacle F, and drawing the plates P, P', M, M' out of the tick, the upper plates moving on a platform C. At the same time, a canvas apron 0 is caused to unroll from a roller o', and receives the mattress on its surface. The apron is afterwards rewound, the parts returned to the forward part of the machine, and the gate f replaced. Means are provided for use in adapting the machine for the manufacture of a narrow mattress, by which the various parts aie laterally adjustable.
