April 29, 1920, [Convention date ]. - Shearing; shearblades.-A machine for slot-cutting sheet material comprises a plurality of shears adjustable along a common rock-shaft and adapted to be set in simultaneous operation by the insertion of the blank, the machine being automatically stopped after a single cut. The upper members of the shears comprising knife blades 20 and cross cutters 22 are secured :to jaws 17 integral with sleeves 15, mounted in bifurcated bearings 16 and slidably keyed to a rock shaft 13. The lower members of the shears consisting of flat strips having cutting and stripping edges 26 are mounted on bars 25 bolted to the bearings 16 and carrying guide-rods 27. The positions of the shears are indicated by a scale 75 and adjustment is effected by means of a wrench 78, coacting with a rack 80. The depth of the slots cut in the blank is determined by stops 81 on the rods 28 and an adjustable side guide 87 is mounted on an extension of the table. The shaft 13 its actuated by crank-arms 31 driven through a clutch 43 and gearing from an electric motor. A collar 41 secured to the clutch member is connected to a bar 50 having a roller sliding in an inclined guide on a spring-pressed sliding bar 55 notched ta receive a rod 60 carried by a crankarm on a shaft 62 the other end of which is connected, as shown in Fig. 3, to a rack-bar 67. In operation, the insertion of the blank beneath the' guides 27 operates a, lever 71 to shift the rackbar 67 and oscillate the shaft 02 thereby releasing the bar 55 the movement of which slides the bar 50 to engage the clutch 43 and start the machine. After a single cut a cam 85 on the shaft 38 shifts the bar 55 to disengage, the clutch and stop the machine while the removal of the blank allows the arm 71 and rod 60 to be restored to their initial positions.

[Class 96] [Also in Group XVII] Box or container bodies of corrugated fibre-board &c. are made from blanks consisting of a sheet of corrugated straw, kraft, &c., faced on each side with paper, the blank being bent to form a tube so that the meeting edges abut at one corner or in one of the walls, the facing paper projecting from one of the meeting edges but not from the other so that the two projecting edges of the facing may be secured to the sheet by adhesive, stitching, &c., to hold the edges in abutting relation. In the blank shown in Fig. 2, the projecting edges of the facing are trimmed to form tongues 43 which are secured on each side of the opposite edge 39. A nearly similar blank may be used to form a box with the join in one side as shown in Fig. 11. The faced sheet is made by feeding facing paper 3, Fig. 1, and kraft &c. 4 of smaller width between corrugating rolls 7, 8, a heating plate 6 being provided for the filler 4, which is coated with adhesive from a paste box 9 and feeding rolls 10. The paper 3 passes around preheating rolls 12, 11 and a pressure roll 13 which forms the two rims into a composite single-faced sheet 4 having the facing 3 projecting at one side only. This sheet passes over idler rolls 14, 18 and an adhesive box 16 with rollers 17 which apply adhesive to the exposed ridges of the corrugations, the sheet thereafter passing through rolls 18, 19. A second facing sheet 20 passes over a preheating roll 22 and is secured to the filler 4 by rolls 17 to form a composite run B, this facing projecting at one edge only like the facing 3. The run B then passes through rolls 23 and hot plates &c. 24 for drying, and thereafter between rolls 25, 26, one of which has an adjustable cut-off 27. Blanks having a plurality of corrugated wall thicknesses may also be made, e.g. two thicknesses of corrugated wall with or without a liner between them, the outermost liners projecting as before. The corrugations of the two thicknesses may be parallel or at right-angles. Open-ended tubular containers may be made by this method.

    • A new and distinct Vaccinium spp. cultivar named ‘WINTER BELL’ is disclosed, characterized by a semi-upright plant habit, vigorous growth and semi-deciduous habit in Florida. The new variety shows tolerance for a wetter soil conditions. Fruit yield is exceptionally high, with fruit ripening early, with first harvest in mid to late March. Fruit is somewhat bell-shaped with good size and an attractive waxy coating. The new variety is a Vaccinium, and is normally used as an ornamental garden or landscape plant.

    • Particles emitted by radio-isotopic by-products of nuclear fission are used as a power source at the cathode of a magnetron system. Particles include high energy electrons having a large associated EMF. In the system a radial electrical vector E, between the cathode and anode, interacts with an axial magnetic vector B vector to produce an E×B force that rotates the particles about the system axis. These emissions are within a set range of velocities. The angular velocity and geometry of a rotating field, known as a space charge wheel (SCW), may be modulated by an external RF inputs to cavities of an anode block and the use of concentric biasing grids between the cathode and anode block. The SCW induces LC values into cavities of the anode, exciting them and producing electrons resonance which may be used to generate power.
