    • A method for treating boiler water condensate to remove undesirable cations which comprises providing a bed of cation-exchange resin, passing water to be treated through said resin bed, and regenerating said resin with an aqueous solution of a salt comprising a volatile amine and an anion selected from anions which do not form precipitates with any cation present in the water to be treated under operational conditions, and wherein the volatile amine is optionally not the same as that employed as the corrosion inhibitor in the boiler water system. The preferred salts include cyclohexylamine citrate, methoxypropylamine citrate, diethanolamine citrate and monoethanolamine citrate. The proposed method is particularly advantageous since the anion of the regenerant salt is selected to avoid the formation of insoluble calcium salts.

    • The present invention is directed to a method for controlling scale which would otherwise be formed from water-soluble calcium, magnesium and iron impurities contained in boiler water which would provide calcium, magnesium and iron ions. The method comprises adding to said water: (i) a chelant selected from the group of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and the water soluble salts thereof, in an amount which is substoichiometric to that amount required to react with said ions present in the water; (ii) a water soluble phosphate salt which will provide phosphate ions in said water in an amount which is less than a 1:1 mole ratio of phosphate to calcium, but which is sufficient to react with all the calcium ions provided by said impurities which are not complexed by the chelant; and (iii) a water soluble polymethacrylic acid or water soluble salt thereof in an amount sufficient to disperse any particles formed by the reaction of the calcium ions with the phosphate ions and any other particulate matter formed by the reactions of the magnesium and iron ions.

    • Methods for treating metal surfaces including contacting the surface with a water soluble or water dispersible polymer comprising a repeat unit (a) having the structure ##STR1## or salt form of said repeat unit, wherein R and R.sub.1 are the same or different and are independently chosen from C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 lower alkylene and wherein z is an integer of from 1-3. The methods also include use of copolymers having in addition to repeat unit (a) above, a repeat unit (b) having the structure ##STR2## from wherein X is OH, NH.sub.2, or OM wherein M is a cation, the molar ration of (a.sub.1):(b) being present in said copolymer being from about 20:1 to 1:20. The methods provide chromium free rinse solutions for use in rinsing phosphate-based conversion coated metal surfaces.
