    • 528,804. Artificial silk. BRITISH ENKA, Ltd., and MULLER, H. D. May 5, 1939, No. 13509. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial silk filaments obtained from viscose are subjected on leaving the spinning bath to an initial stretching by means of a pair of rollers, then to a second stretching while passing through a bath of liquid containing dilute acid and a salt at elevated temperature and then to further stretching by a second pair of rollers before they are taken up by a spinning pot or spinning bobbin. The liquid of the stretching bath may contain small quantities of sodium sulphate and sulphuric acid together, if desired, with magnesium or zinc sulphate. Rollers rotating at increasing peripheral speeds or stepped rollers may be used. There may be four or more stretching operations. Stepped rollers may be arranged so that each stretching operation takes place in a number of steps. One or more guide rollers may be provided for guiding the filaments through the liquid. As shown in Fig. 3, the filaments 14 pass from the bath 16 over stepped roller 12, 13 and guide roller 15 and thence around roller 17 in the bath 18 to the stepped roller 19, 20 and guide roller 21. The filaments then pass round guide roller 23 and thence to bobbin 24. The peripheral speed of the bobbin may be less, equal to or greater than that of the step 20 but in any case must be greater than that of the step 19. Stretching takes place at the stepped roller 12, 13, and between this roller and the stepped roller 19, 20, and at this latter roller. Instead of the bobbin, there may be used a spinning pot.

    • Embodiments produce and apply tissue-related structures in connection with various medical treatments. Such structures can be applied, as grafts, implants, scaffolds, etc., to replace, modify, or engineer tissue in the body. For example, such structures can be employed to reshape the cornea in order to correct vision. One example includes a tissue cell source including tissue cells in a fluid and a printer configured to deposit the tissue cells in a three-dimensional arrangement to form a tissue cell-based structure. Another example includes a source including a photoreactive liquid precursor, an application system configured to deposit the photoreactive liquid precursor in one or more applications to form a three-dimensional polymer-based structure, and an illumination system configured to deliver light to the photoreactive liquid precursor deposited by the application system and to solidify the photoreactive liquid precursor into the three-dimensional polymer-based structure.

    • An electrical energy applicator in one embodiment extends from a proximal end to a distal end. The energy conducting applicator includes, at the proximal end, a connection to one or more electrical energy sources. The energy conducting applicator directs electrical energy from the one or more electrical energy sources to the distal end. The energy conducting applicator includes an outer conductor and an inner conductor extending to the distal end. The outer conductor and the inner conductor are separated by a gap. The outer conductor includes a plurality of moveable outer segments and the inner conductor includes a plurality of moveable inner segments. The plurality of outer segments and the plurality of inner segments form a total contact surface at the distal end. The total contact surface is positionable at a surface of an eye. The electrical energy is applied to the eye according to the total contact surface.

    • A system includes a conducting element that conducts energy from an energy source to apply therapy to an eye. The system includes a covering configured to be removably attached to the conducting element. The covering has an interface surface that is positionable at an eye. At least a portion of the interface surface includes one or more dielectric materials. Energy is deliverable to the eye through the interface surface. In one aspect, the covering provides an electrical insulator to minimize the concentration of electrical current in the area of contact with the eye. In another aspect, the covering allows the eye to be cooled during the application of energy without directly applying coolant to the eye. In another aspect, the covering includes a dielectric layer that may provide varying impedances that allow different patterns for energy delivery. In another aspect, the sheath promotes hygienic use of the conducting element.
