A ball castor includes a rotatable member, such as a ball 11 (as shown), a cylinder (26, Figs. 3, 4), or a diabols (29, Figs. 5, 6), presenting a curved surface to an upper part of the main ball 10, a spring 16 acting on the rotatable member, a housing enclosing the rotatable member 11, the spring 16 and more than half the ball 10, and means 18 braking rotation of the ball 10 when the spring 16 is compressed by a predetermined amount. As shown, the braking means may comprise a resilient ring 18. The housing 12 may have a horizontal, peripheral flange (28, Figs. 3-6) which engages the ground when the ball 10 is moved into the housing 12. The cylinder (26) and diabols (29) are laterally offset from the crown of the ball 10. The braking means may comprise a pad (31, Figs. 5, 6) to brake the diabols (29) which in turn brakes the ball 10. In another embodiment (Figs. 9, 10), a pair of oppositely disposed diabolos (40) having cylindrical central portion (41) are urged by an adjustable leaf spring (42) into contact with the ball 10 and a braking pad (49) engages the upper surface of the ball 10 under load.

A castor, lockable against rolling action, comprises a fixed shell 12, having a cylindrical axle 28 housing a compression spring 32, and a shell 14 which has a sleeve 22 slidable and rotatable on the axle 28, the spring 32 acting on a pivot ball 34 to bias the shells apart, to an extent limited by a pin 48 in a groove 26, until overcome by load when the rotatable shell 14 moves towards the fixed shell 12 and annular surfaces 16, 18 at the rims of the shells frictionally engage to prevent rotation. The fixed shell 12 has an integral bearing 34 for a vertical swivel axis 38 which is retained by an expanding clip 44 in a socket 40 having an apertured flange 42 for securing to an article of furniture. In modifications the pivot ball is replaced by a cylindrical pivot piece, and the compression spring and pivot piece are replaced by a plunger manually adjusted axially of the axle 28 by a plug in threaded engagement with the axle to lock or release the axle independent of the load. In further modifications the plug has threaded or cam engagement with the plunger, the plunger is positioned inside a compression spring to provide selective or automatic braking, a spring clip holding the sleeve and axle together replaces the pin 48, a flat-attachment plate is provided, or an annulus of friction material is provided between the abutting surfaces of the shells.

A castor which is free-rolling and freecastoring under loads up to a predetermined value includes a mild steel spring 18, having an end 20 on which a partspherical floor-contacting wheel member 10 rotates, a coil 26, and a spindle 28 mounted in a socket 30 on an axis offset from the vertical axis 14 of the member, a load exceeding the predetermined value causing the coil 26 to descend into braking engagement with the wheel 10 to prevent rolling, and greater load causing a flange 32 to contact the coil 26 to prevent castoring. When the castor, in trailing position, is pushed against a low obstruction, such as a carpet, the coil 26 pivots open and braking surfaces of the wheel and the spring do not engage. In modifications the spring consists of several coils or springs are provided at each side of the wheel and may be engaged by the flange before engagement by the wheel. In further modifications the flange, or some other member, having a plane or arcuate braking surface engages the wheel to inhibit all movement, the socket and flange are replaced by a plate, or the wheel is cylindrical or a complete sphere detachably mounted on the spindle 20.

摘要： A passive and slope adaptable prosthetic foot automatically adapts to terrain slope, without requiring motors or batteries, and provides a biomimetic range of motion, without dampers and their inherent energy losses. The foot incorporates a passive, mechanically-activated cutoff valve that responds to a ground reaction force, rather than active electronics or a microprocessor, in an hydraulic circuit that automatically locks and unlocks a prosthetic ankle at appropriate points of a human gait cycle. A damping coefficient of the hydraulic circuit, and a spring constant of a spring, permits the foot to achieve foot flat before locking, and stores sufficient energy during each stance phase to automatically self-reset during a following swing phase.
